"Attack!" A voice screeched out from below. There was a cacophony of animalistic sounds following the command as the swarm of demons and devils rose from the depths of Hell.
"Defend thyselves!" A strong, male voice called out from above. The ringing of a trumpet could be heard sounding over the battle as the defenders came at the swarm. The fighters came together with a clash of sound as swords met shields or armor.
As the combatants fought, there was a lone girl watching with horror as the fighters fell to the demons. Wanting to help but knowing she could not fight the girl watched the leader of the fighters. She knew he was the bravest of all the fighters. She kept him in sight as she went from hiding place to hiding place, watching.
As the fight continued, any time one of the fighters fell, be it demon or defender, another would take their place. She hoped that it would soon end because the defenders were getting weary. Watching from the edge of the fight, the girl spotted something creeping up on the leader as he fought with the demons. She carefully crawled near the creature, being very careful not to be noticed.
The demon that was now creeping across the battlefield had escaped the notice of the other defenders by playing dead. It was by no means unhurt, but it was still able to carry out its orders to kill the leader. Not knowing it was being watched, the demon quietly rose and came towards the leader of the defenders as he fought. Coming upon the fight, the demon raised its dagger to stab at the leader.
The girl watched, frozen by terror, as the demon raised the dagger it was holding. Looking around at the others she whimpered as she saw they were all engaged with other demons. Looking back she saw that the leader had been caught in a bear hug by the demon he had been fighting. The other demon with the dagger was just about to strike the leader. "No," she quietly said at first. Her voice couldn’t reach the other defenders because it was too quiet. She knew that if she didn’t do anything the leader would be killed by the demon. "MICHAEL! NO!" she cried out as she burst from hiding to charge at the demon.
Whipping its head about with surprise, the demon saw the girl charging at him. Smiling cruelly, it brought the dagger around as the girl tackled him. They both rolled to the edge of the crevice, the girl hanging on to the demon’s wings. It swung the dagger it had and laughed as he heard the girl scream in pain as feathers began to float. The edge of the crevice forgotten, the demon stood up and lunged at the girl who was on the ground struggling to remain conscious. Reacting on instinct, the girl kicked at the demon and drove him to the edge. The demon flailed about as the lip began to crumble beneath him, sending him over the edge. He managed to snag the hem of the girl’s dress as he fell and started pulling her down with him.
Struggling to stay on the ground she began to claw at the dirt, trying to find something to hold. "Help!" she shouted to any of the defenders within hearing range. They had stopped falling but she was still being drawn to the edge. The demon began to struggle, trying to get her to fall off of the edge.
The leader had managed to break the demon’s hold on him and turned to find the girl and the demon falling over the edge. Racing over to them, he hurled a spear that was laying near them at the demon. It scored on the demon’s shoulder and it let go of the girl as it continued to fall, screeching. The girl was still hanging on the edge when another demon attacked Michael and drew him away from her. "No!" he shouted at the demon and furiously attacked it. Surprised at the vehemence of the attack, the demon had no chance to defend itself.
Her vision was growing black around the edges as the other demon died at Michael’s sword. Her arms began to relax their hold with the ground as she stopped struggling and the lip of the crevice was crumbling under her. Slipping backwards, she whispered, "Mi…Michael." As she fell off the edge, she saw Michael reach for her but she was falling too fast for him.
"FATHER!" he cried in desperation and looked to the sky. No time to think about what he was doing, he gathered his energy into a ball of light. Hurling the light at the falling girl, he watched at it enveloped her and then she disappeared. "To earth," he whispered. "Live and grow. I will find thee soon." He rejoined the fight, then, wanting to get it over and done with.
