Let me start off by saying, take a look
at your new N64 heavyweight
champion.
Upon first inspection of the game, it appears to be just a simple
update of
Wrestlemania 2000. But after spending a few hours with the game
I came to the
conclusion that there were more to my original thought.
Of course it has a modified version of
the game engine that we all know and
love that came to the 64 back in 1997( ah-la WCW Vs. NWO World
Tour), but I
deeply felt that THQ gave the game enough additions to keep the
mix
interesting. No Mercy tops all other wrestling games by featuring
65 current
WWF superstars to Taz-plex and superplex around, with the ability
to unlock a
few secret characters such as the late great Andre the Giant
and so on
through the SmackDown Mall. I thought it was kinda neat how they
came up with
the idea of unlocking secret wrestlers and new outfits through
this new
feature and I commend THQ for trying something different. Speaking
of
additions, I have to mention the new play modes which in my book
are among
the best of any wrestling games out there. My only gripe with
the new added
material was that they should have put the Hell in The Cell match
and the
Casket match that was featured in Smackdown 2. If it had those
two matches I
beleve that this would have been the top wrestling game overall.
Speaking graphically, No Mercy looks pretty much the same as
Wrestlemania
2000 did, but with some minor upgrades. As each wrestler struts
there stuff
to the ring you will notice that the audience looks a little
more realistic,
as does the wrestlers themselves feature there own special taunts.
Plus when
each wrestler walks to the ring you will notice that they have
there own
theme music and a Titantron video feed that appear to be a little
fuzzy.
On the soundend of the walkway thats where
No Mercy suffers at its most.
Sure the audience cheers for there favorite superstars and boos
the most
hated of the bunch, but they only sound mediocre at the best.
No Mercy has
absolutely no wrestler voices and/or commentary at all, and also
when
following the storyline mode the player will have to read text
dialogue to
follow the story. Once a match begins, a funky techno beat keeps
the
smackdown moving and grooving until you beat your opponent to
a bloody bliss.
Along the gameplay side of things, if you
have played WM 2000, WCW
Revenge,or World Tour well then you have pretty much seen the
gameplay in No
Mercy. Don't get me wrong that isn't actually such a bad thing
though. Thats
actually the best feature of the THQ wrestling series is that
you can pick
up the controller and go. It isn't very hard to learn this game
at all! Many
of you may have heard already that THQ will be working for
the X-Box so lets hope they keep this awesome game engine and
keep pumping
out such great wrestling games. With all that said and done I
give No Mercy
for The N64 9 Gamebrains out of 10....
