Torneko: The Last Hope review by Keldon Warlord 1/10/01
Company: Enix
Gametype: RPG
Platform: PSX
Screens:

As most of you know Torneko is set in the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan) world. But the storyline is above average and really doesn't have anything to do with Dragon Warrior I-VII that much at all. Torneko is a random dungeon type of RPG so expect there to be a high level of mastering your skills in the ways of fighting fighting and more fighting.....

Everytime you enter a dungeon expect to be back at level one with no stats, so the gameplay is alot similar to Time Stalkers or Chocabo (however you spell it) Dungeon games. By my standards I thought they pulled this type of gameplay off very well, also I should mention that i'm not the biggest fan of randon dungeon settings but I felt that this game was done well. In addition to the random dungeons, enemies and items in the dungeons are also random.

The graphics came straight from a Snes game as does pretty much any DW game but is that such a bad thing? Akira Toriyama(of DBZ fame) had his hands dipped once again in the character design so you can suspect that thepersonality of the game to be near perfect quality. I just hope with all the next gen. systems that are out (and coming out) that the Dragon Warrior world will grace other systems soon and i'm hoping(if not praying) that they will
bring a version to the Dreamcast.

As I spoke of characters earlier, most of the enemies were straight out of some of the older DW games as well as the lead charcter himself(Torneko incase you didn't read the title of the game haha). There were tons of items to find within the game which help keep the game interesting, plus the combat was extremely strategic most of the time so that would keep any player on the toes. After finishing most of the game you will earn some special features such as entering dungeons already leveled up from past battles and a set of different weapons that are pretty cool.

Overall Torneko was a decent game at best, and I felt that it
left much to be desired. The sound quality was above average as it had its moments but there were times when the mute buttion was very tempting. As I mentioned beforehand, the graphics were not the best on the system, but were kinda pleasing in the ways of that it give that special retro setting to the mix. The gameplay were also pleasing if not among the best of any random dungeon
setting. Be that as it may, if your into the insane pleasure of random...well...everything I think you should pick up this game as soon as
possible. But if your looking for an added depth of gameplay then maybe you should turn your eyes torward Valkrie Profile, or wait for the next Dragon
Warrior incarnation(DRAGON WARRIOR VII!!!) to be released in the states. If your into high production graphics and minimal amount of gameplay then by all means get Final Fantasy IX( in my book it is the best one since III). As I always end my reviews......with that said and done I give Torneko an overall
rating of 6.5 gamebrain out of 10. I shall end this review with a plead to great people located Enix party by saying....PLEASE MAKE SOME DREAMCAST
RPG'S!!!!
