Power level wise: Juggernaut is one example of a super villain who is either /to/ powerful or never powerful enough. Editors, writers and fans have their way with him. His powers fluctuate so wildly and with no explanation it's pretty terrible. This is for no reason other then Marvel editors and writers forgetting about things they've established in the past about characters and changing them around for the present. Juggernaut isn't the only victim of this. Many second tier and even first tier characters are. For this page, The Juggernaut I'm going to present is my favorite incarnation. Ie, Juggernaut in his purist unsullied form as depicted during the eighties and early ninties. The Juggernaut entire armies gathered to try and stop when they were aware of his approach. Bear in mind that while I may interject my own opinion at times, much of this /is/ substantiated by comic acts by the character..so yes..written back in the day Juggernaut truly was this powerful. Today? Eh..well..Marvel will change characters as they see fit and want to appease the fans..though I've hopes between the upcoming plans for some of their books and what I know of his upcoming appearences that Juggernaut will be restored to his former status as one of the most feared and strongest menaces on Earth.
UNMEASURED STRENGTH
According to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, Juggernaut's strength
levels have not been accuratly measured and he is said to have 'limitless
strength'. He possesses what is known as Class 100 strength.
Meaning
he has the capacity to lift well over 100 tons with little to no effort and
as of yet there has been nothing placed before him he's been unable to move
in some fashion. Incorrectly, Juggernaut's strength levels have
since then at times been placed on par with Colossus by some fans and in
the Venom mini-series he was wrongly shown as being just around Venom's level.
However: Juggernaut's strength arcs up there with the likes of
Thor, Hulk, Silver Surfer and numerous others.
There /are/ stronger..but not many. Juggernaut's strength has allowed him
to do things from rip buildings in half with little to no effort, knock other
superhumans across entire cities and go toe to toe with the likes of Thor
and Hulk. He has knocked Hulk unconscious before, defeating him with pure
brute strength, (Though an element of surprise also helped) and can tangle
with the biggest of the big and baddest of the bad.
It is often debated just /who/ is stronger..Hulk or Juggernaut. Well to take nothing away from Hulk..Hulk truly is 'The strongest one there is'. Hulk is stronger because Hulk has dynamic strength. It grows with his rage. Although it has been /implied/ via the Juggernaut One Shot that Juggernaut's strength also grows with rage..officially speaking Hulk is potentially stronger..depending upon which Hulk we are dealing with of course. Maestro is probably on par to automatically stronger then Juggernaut..Merged Hulk probably about equal but his strength rarely grows in battle. Mr. Fixit starts off much much weaker and his strength has been shown to really not grow like the others and Savage Hulk starts off a little stronger then Fixit but yet still weaker then Hulk weaker Juggernaut, while he could match and surpass Juggernaut would have to truly work to do so.
As an example of Juggernaut's strength levels. In the now classic Marvel-Team up, between the Xmen and Spiderman, where Juggernaut shared half of his power with Black Tom (Though it was said that 'half' was an odd approximation as Juggernaut's powers were said to be limitless) Black Tom, having only a portion of the power of The Juggernaut, was strong enough to dig his fingers under and uproot a five story building and was stronger by far then Colossus still.
INVULNERABILITY
What Juggernaut /doesn't/ have over you in strength he's sure to have over
you in this department. Wether or not you have him with a force field or
just pure brute muscle so powerful it cannot be breached..the Juggernaut
is virtually impervious to physical harm. Juggernaut's invulnerability
is a conjecture for much debate at times. He's at times employed a
force field that did all the work for him, while other times it wasn't a
force field at all..he was simply /that/ tough. This power has been written
and rewritten so many times it's hilarious. More often then not, he no longer
uses or has the forcefield and it's considered that he /once/ had one..but
has grown in power so much over the decades that he no longer needs one.
Marvel wanted to get rid of the force field and make him simply that tough..and
I actually agree with them. I prefer Juggernaut without the force field.
It makes him seem that much more powerful that he doesn't rely on
external
sources to be impervious to harm. (Well..aside from the gem that made him
of course.)
The Juggernaut has had thousands of tons of steel been knocked onto him and emerged seconds later unscathed. He's taken the mountain shattering blows of Hulk and Thor and not even been knocked back. The disintgration beam of Nimrod didn't even phase him and he's taken what Thor described as a blast powerful enough to crack the armor of a Celestial..and just kept coming. When he first became Juggernaut he was buried under an entire mountain side. Deep underground, and while it took him time to get out..he was unharmed. Juggernaut /has/ been stunned before. It does seem that if he is caught unawares by an assualt and an assualt that is strong enough he can be winded. At least one occasion of this occured when Hulk tagged him in the stomach while /completely/ maddened and briefly stunned him. If he is prepared it's another matter all together. Juggernaut's examples of invulnerability levels are wide. It's his secondary call to fame. (The first being his unstoppable force and irrestible object attributes) Most of them can be found in fights with Thor and Hulk and the Xmen. Paticularly Thor and Hulk who regularly render mountain range altering attacks against foes such as Juggernaut. He is a foe built for them to fight and has caused many a classic Marvel slugfest with those of their calibur.
SIZE
Officially speaking, back in the day when they just needed a stat for it
and didn't really pay much mind to everything else. Juggernaut's height was
6'10" and his weigh 900 lbs. This, for you X-fans, places him, however, smaller
then the 7'5" Colossus. Just doesn't make sense. Even the earliest appearences
of Juggernaut and Colossus side by side had him much bigger then the metal
russkie. Somewhere, somehow, someone goofed. Either Juggernaut's size
changes between him being in armor and out of armor..or Juggernaut plain
and simply is not 6'10". Personally, I like to think that Juggernaut's
size /does/ alter..similar to someone like Goliath/Atlas.. Yet not quite
as drastically. Cain may simply have a power to be as big as he
wants to be, either in armor or out of armor. It certainly
would make sense and fall in line with the bigger then reality Juggernaut
that is classically drawn and also make even more sense considering that
when out of armor, Juggernaut is typically drawn as a /really/ big..but not
overwhelmingly huge man. Considering the effort he goes through to maintain
his secret id, distinguishing himself via size makes sense and well..Cain
Marko is drawn as smaller then Jugs in the same comics Jugs appears in to
often. At any rate, possible size-alteration abilities would make sense but
aren't really substantiated by anything official in Marvel and are simply
my personal views on the character based on artwork and side by side comparisions
to other characters. One thing is for certain. Number crunching aside..
Juggernaut. Is.
BIG.
Endurance
Like the proverbial energizer bunny it is /very/ hard to make Juggernaut grow tired. He has a level of endurance that is remarkably on par with that of The Hulk. Meaning he simply put does not tire easily. It would take a prolonged conflict with someone on his own power level to drain him to the point of exhaustion..which has bluntly never happened. He's never tired before, even during the tremendous slugfests with Thor and Hulk and in terms of endurance level, the MSH RPG rated it on par with Hulk himself (UNE Endurance). In other words, this is one boy who doesn't stop.
Regeneration
A gift of Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane, love 'em, hate 'em..Juggernaut
didn't have a regeneration power until they gave him one. He never really
needed one. Hulk /can/ be hurt physically..Juggernaut under normal circumstnaces
can't. Why have someone who is already indestructable be able to regenerate..?
But..nonetheless, there it is. Actually, certain magical weapons apparently
/can/ effect Juggernaut if they strike him as well as certain magical effects
and spells. (Ie, how Thor actually managed to stop him once using his hammers
most powerful blast.. Granted, Juggernaut was only walking and it took prolonged
assualts but it happened so credit must be given.) Shatterstar's
Mojo<tm> blades managed to pierce Juggernaut's eyes once and forced
him to heal. His regeneration is actually more of a enhanced healing then
true
regeneration
also Hulk and Wolverine..meaning he has to actually have a moment to perform
the deed. He doesn't just heal on his own..thankfully for those who face
off against this beast.
Unstoppable Force
Juggernaut's call to fame. The name Juggernaut /means/ irrestible force..and he is. Literally. It goes beyond brute strength..he just is an unstoppable force. A large measure of his so called 'limitless' strength is attributed to this ability as it is a strength and physical based act. The act of being physically unstoppable. Once Juggernaut is in motion. NO force has been observed being able to stop him. Slow him down, perhaps, but not totally stop him. Not Thor's hammer, not Hulk's fists. Not a mountain range, or a falling skyscraper. It defies normal measurement..he simply cannot be stopped once he starts moving. Be he walking or running. This power is apparently a measure of his strength, hence why his strength is reportedly limitless. It draws upon the seemingly endless energies of the god Cytorrak and pumps up his strength to no apparent end whenever he is in motion. Walking, charging, running etc. Thor, Hercules, Hulk could all get infront of him and they wouldn't succeed in slowing him down. Now there /have/ been cases where Juggernaut has been stopped before. Most of them utterly bogus and again examples of Marvel tripping over their own feet but a few with justifable explanations. Onslaught--well..Onslaught, what can we say about Onslaught? Rewrite after rewrite and so many problems there most true Marvel fans don't even consider that storyline and the Heroes Reborn afterwards as anything worth sniffing at. In Juggernaut's case..all I want to know is how did Onslaught rip out of his chest a gem that was actually in orbit anyway and how did he manage to rip into his chest to begin with when not even Wolverine's claws and Hulk's fists have managed that? Beats me.
Unleashed Hulk stopped Juggernaut also but bear in mind that Unleashed Hulk was Hulk + Celestial Level Technology pumping him up + an entire universe of energy flowing into him. (He was the conduit of the Heroes Reborn universe.) Er, as much as I like Juggernaut, he's not overcoming that. Thor also managed to stop Juggernaut once, using his most powerful blast of energy<tm> while Juggernaut was simply walking forward slowly. Those are the only legit cases I can think of. When I say legit, I mean, cases that didn't involve a retcon of any characters powers and had justifiable reasonings to it. Basically under any normal circumstance, he's not stopping. Obviously throwing in cosmic entity level intervention and technology is another story.
Life Support
Juggernaut neither needs to eat, breath, sleep or do any normal humanoid functions. He can survive in virtually any hostile enviornment from the depths of space to the pressures of the bottom of the ocean without ill effect as well. If he eats and breathes he does so via luxury and not by necessity. As a note, he is not /immune/ however to the effects of certain things like extremely potent and powerful gas and drugs and can be sedated or effected by them if somehow he ingests them. They would have to contend with his massive levels of endurance however but he is hardly totally immune. To most convential diseases however he is and does not get sick
Unaging
The Juggernaut had not aged visually a day between the day he gained his powers and the present, although his powers have evolved and aged..he himself in terms of 'age' and physical status remains the same age when he stumbled onto Cytorrak's temple. He is not a normal 'mortal' by any means and is sustained by the magical energies that have empowered him for so long. Juggernaut is Charles /older/ step-brother and Charles is pushing the sixties+ at least. Maybe older as Charles was grown during the second World War.
Armor, Helm and Skullcap
The most defining feature is his helm. Juggernaut's helm literally renders him immune to psionic attacks of any negative manner. From psionic probes to direct attacks..with the helm on, Juggernaut is unable to be attacked psionically. His presence /can/ be felt and sensed however. Actually attacking him is another matter entirely. The armor is bonded to his helm by magical means and can be pulled loose however it would take at least strength on par with Colossus and even he would have to strain. Hulk has knocked it loose before by throwing him hard enough into a mountain side and has also punched it off. Typically beneath the helm is a skullcap, scrapped together by pieces of metal that the armor was fashioned from. The skull cap serves as a fail safe in case the helm is ever removed and has teh same functionality of the helm. But is much easier removed as it is held by straps. Dazzlers laser blasts served capable of removing the cap. Juggernaut does not always wear the skull cap but typically if he's in armor he's wearing the helm. The armor is bound to him mystically and can be summoned to him, typically with a flare of red energies about him. Psylocke did manage to /slightly/ puncture through the helm's protection once but this went unexplained afterwards but may have been due to the fact that her powers are also slightly magical based.
Flaws
Juggernaut for all his power may /seem/ unbeatable but he isn't. His senses
are vulnerable to certain attacks as Nimrod once put him down using a high
intensity sonic beam that attacked his
neural
impulses. Also, Juggernaut is /nortoriously/ vulnerable to psionic attacks.
Typically, he is handled by the Xmen by team work that manages to get
his helm off and then the resident psi of the Xmen gets to him..and
we all know how many of them they have. Juggernaut has /never/ been defeated
physically before in a straight up fight. When I say that, I mean, someone
not intervening. Typically his losses occur by trickery or an outside force
intervening. Even Hulk has not managed to defeate Juggernaut without some
type of outside intervention where as Juggernaut has defeated Hulk--although
in that case trickery was involved so again it was not necessarily fair.
Peter David himself, he who most Hulk fans hold to be God of Hulk, has said
that neither Juggernaut or Hulk have beaten each other in a straight up
uninterfered no-holds barred match..and thus the debates of who is more powerful
ever go on. It's unavoidable though. The two are essentially Marvel's
pentultimate 'brick' and 'tank' characters. One, good, one bad. One of these
days they should do another classic slug fest between the two though with
the current Hulk it seems unlikely..
Other Abilities
Juggernaut has displayed a few other abilities back
in the /distant/. past that have since been either lost by him in the books
or simply forgotten about by the writers. There was a point in
time where he showed the potential to cast Cytorrak based spells
and may have displayed telepathic abilities at one point in time as well.
These have all since been lost and pretty much he's what he is today. A huge
red brick. The current version of Juggernaut has at varying times displayed
other massive powers. Such as in a more recent version of Xmen where he grew
so powerful and so strong he was both physically and mystically punching
his way through dimensional barriers and grew to some eighty feet tall. Granted,
he was insane and couldn't make much /use/ of that power but..well..it was
a pretty nasty situation.
Fine, Go back..see if I care..
