Darkness

Through this dark,

I cannot see,

The wounded hands,

That comfort me.

Cassie sat in the dark, staring at the wall. It had been long since she saw anything at all. She blinked once, then again, trying to adjust to this dim light. Yes, it seemed dark. But it wasn't. Cassie had turned on a light. Yet the walls were still blackened with the night's glow. Wind whipped by her, blowing on her back and neck.

She slowly smiled to herself. Jake was here. She felt him. She kept staring at the wall. There, a small shard of light appeared.

"C-close the door," She said nervously. The door silently closed and she heard footsteps tapping lightly, leaving her. She hummed to herself. It had been Jake's favorite song.

She missed him. He had left her and never come back. She stopped humming. Then continued, now singing the childish notes of a song she heard long ago. The humming turned to softly spoken words.

"You are my sunshine...my only sunshine..."

She stopped. She lapsed into a trance, as she often did. It was becoming more regular. When she was in her world, she was with Jake. She unconsciously rocked back and forth, and then blinked, jarred from her dreamlike state. She started to hum again. She had the faint flicker that something was wrong. But she didn't know what.

She went back to 'her world.' Jake was there again. She couldn't stop thinking about him. But this was not a nice dream. They were in Hell. The screams, the demons, the roars of those demons. And a tiger, standing alongside a wolf and a bear. A gorilla was already in the lead.

Cassie whimpered. She did not like this dream. She didn't know what it meant.

She stayed in it, though. The tiger, bleeding already, attacked again. He lunged at a deer. He was hurting a helpless animal! No, this deer was bad. Cassie saw his tail. The tail swiped at the tiger and...

Cassie screamed. A crack of light in her dark room, and the nice men came to her.

"Cassie, are you okay?"

"He...and then...the tail...and the tiger's dead!" She sobbed, wrestling in the white coat that the nice men had given her. They held her steady while feeding her some medication. She looked up at them and smiled. "I used to feed medication to animals," She said in a childish voice.

"Yes, that's nice. We'll be back tomorrow."

And in her nice, dark, cell Cassie rocked back and forth, humming to herself.

"What the hell was she talking about?" One of the men that tended to Cassie asked.

"I don't know. But don't let on that she won't be leaving here yet," The other guy said. They walked into the storage room to have a conversation with the institute's founder, Victor Trent.

Rachel stood in the graveyard. She thought about Tobias. She also thought of the others. Ax, taken as a Controller. Jake, killed. Marco, died trying to save Jake. Cassie...her case was worst of all. Locked up in the mental institute, she saw only darkness.

They don't have tombstones either, Rachel thought to herself. She went into the forest, where Tobias used to hunt for his food. She looked at the small mound of dirt with a cross over it.

"Goodbye, Tobias," She said, smiling sadly as tears rolled down her cheeks. He sees only darkness, too, She realized.

< Goodbye, Rachel, > Ax -the newly appointed Visser Three- sneered as he caught her unawares. His tailblade made fast work of her.

There was only darkness, no light. Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill existed no more. Only Visser Three. The others were dead, of course, except for Cassie. Jake's death was too much for her. She resided in her room, the one with the padded walls. Aximili knew for a fact that she was to be infested. And then, she would see the darkness.

THE END
