Ayanami Rei is the test pilot of Eva-00. She was referred as "First Child". All her previous records have been erased. Unlike other young girls, she seldom speaks and shows her feeling to other people. Probably the only one she cares is Ikari Gendou, the "Commander Ikari" as she referred. (She calls Ikari Shinji "Ikari-kun".) She only shows her smile towards Gendou. They treat each other like father and daughter. Also, her apartment is a mess. The area around the apartment is dirty and noisy. Using Akagi Ritsuko's words, "She's not good at living."
Does Rei love Shinji? It seems that the answer is "Yes". She has been saving Shinji more than once, and even when she did self-destruction she said "I want to unite with Ikari-kun."
