There are three categories of membership into the Fairburn - Officer, Enlisted and Civilian. Each of these types is reviewed below, and it is up to the prospective member to inform the Fairburn Command of their intended level of activity. These categories bear no reflection on character rank. Everyone in these categories will be a full part of the Fairburn, and so will be notified of major updates to the pages.
1.1 Officer
Is actively involved in the Fairburn project, either by helping out with the pages/publications, writing items to publish or providing artwork for the pages, and may have submitted a character. (Has joined the mailing list.)
1.2 Enlisted
Has either submitted a character for the stories in the past and is no longer active, or chooses not to be very active. (May have joined the mailing list.)
1.3 Civilian
Hasn't submitted a character, but shows support for the page. (May have joined the mailing list.)
2.1 Availability of Position
The character may not take a position currently held by any other character. Like on a Starship, the positions are theirs until reassignment, promotion, incapacity or death. However, if the character's creator is agreeable to a change, both creators may contact Fairburn Command with an explanatory storyline (or story) for the decision to be broadcast to the network at large.
2.2 Submission Procedures
All seeking to apply to the Fairburn must supply Command (contacted at [email protected]) with:
a/ Their real name.
These details will only be given out or put on the Web with prior permission. If privacy is required, Command will be the mediator between participants. All details will be kept strictly confidential, except author/artist credits. If the author allows it, a link will be put to their personal homepage or email address at the bottom of each page of their story.
b/ A contact ICQ number, email or snailmail (if not online) address.
c/ A character outline or supply some way to help the site (unless seeking "Civilian" status). There is also a mailing list to join. This is not compulsory, but highly recommended.
2.3 Links to the Enterprise D and E
There are already a number of characters in the senior officers' ranks with links to the -D/-E, and so if a character with ties to the Enterprise (either having served there or have friends in the crew of it, particularly amongst its senior ranks), then the character must be a junior.
3.1 Major Characters
If one of the main characters in the story is not your own, it is a courtesy to show the story to the creator of said character to see if the portrayal matches the character as they intended; or if the portrayal was intended to be off (e.g., for a plot point), this will be accompanied by an explanation of the intent.3.2 Star Trek
While it is the intent of these pages to have a different spin on the Star Trek Universe, this is still a Star Trek site, and if the story deviates too far from the established universe without sufficient explanation, Command reserves the right to query it.3.3 Story Types
Stories do not have to take place on board the Fairburn. Stories may have little to do with the Fairburn, as long as an aspect of the Fairburn (or its personnel) is featured somewhere in the text, even in passing. Examples : they may write of the affect the Fairburn’s mission there had; it may be a story set on a character's homeworld as the family wonders how they are, etc. We seek to cover the forgotten aspects of the Star Trek experience as well as share the adventures. No pornography will be tolerated, but well written erotica is permissable.
3.4 Money in Stories
For the purposes of the Fairburn, we are going to assume that Starfleet officers get paid a small "recreational" stipend, this increasing with rank and position. This will allow Fairburn to remain in keeping with what has been established in both TNG ("There is no money in the Federation - we have evolved beyond it") and what has been established in TNG, DS9 and VOY ("That's why they pay me the big bucks"... "I hope you have [the latinum]" ... "saw his Starfleet uniform and immediately doubled the price" et al). So while all physical needs are met - shelter, clothing, food, furnishings, etc, those other pursuits that require payment can be paid for by Starfleet officers.
4.1 Fairburn Command
"Command" is whoever is in charge of putting together the pages. She/he holds final say on submissions, as she/he is in charge of forming the Fairburn into a cohesive whole. This term has no bearing on character rank or status. At time of publishing this is Annette Webster.
