Do males get along with each other as well as females do? Males get along fine, as long as they are neutered before their sexual maturity and as long as they were housed in groups at an early age.

Do I have to get permission from my landlord to keep guinea pigs? Check your rental contract.  In most cases there is no formality necessary if you only keep a few clean, quiet animals.

Should I get my guinea pig from an animal shelter? It depends on how long the animal has been in the shelter.  The longer it has been removed from personal attention, the harder it may be to resocialize it.  Take it directly to your veterinarian for a health check.

Are guinea pigs expensive? Prices for guinea pigs vary as much as the variety of strains and vendors.  Take time to compare!

What should I watch out for when I am ready to pick my pets? The animal should appear healthy and alert, the teeth should be properly aligned, and the nails shoudl not be too long.

Can I train my guinea pig to use the litter box? This is a question of your patience and of guinea pig character.  Not everyone is successful.

Will my guinea pigs bite me? When your guinea pig is scared it expresses this by growling and by chattering its teeth. If you do not leave it in peace it might try to bite your finger.  It is also not wise to try to use your hand to separate two fighting cavies.

May I feed leftovers from my meals to my guinea pig? Guinea pigs are herbivores, and as such need fresh greens and food that is rich in cellulose.  They enjoy fruit peelings, and leftover vegetables, but will not do well with more than an occasional meal of human salad.
