Belinda Carlisle started out her solo career after the breakup of her original
group, The Gogo's. In a way, this might've been the best thing that could
happen for Belinda.
Belinda's career skyrocketed. She released a top-10 hit off of her debut
album Belinda titled "Mad About You." Belinda had made the mainstream pop
scene. This meant, however, that she no longer fit in with her record company,
IRS. It was time to move on.
Belinda's next album, Heaven on Earth, was released by MCA. The album
gained Belinda a number one single, "Heaven is a Place On Earth," and another
top-10 hit, "I Get Weak."
Runaway Horses added to Belinda's streak of top-10 hits with "Leave
a Light On For Me."
No one is perfect all of the time, however. Belinda's fourth album,
Live Your Life Be Free, was not a major success. This is surprising, because
Live Your Life includes some of Carlisle's best work to date. The title
track is a delicious blend of rock and pop. The feel of the album is much
more raw than her first three albums. The music has a rough rock beat to
it that greatly enhances Belinda's vocals. "Love Revolution" is arguably
the best song Belinda has yet recorded.
Belinda released a greatest hits package before moving to Virgin records.
Virgin released Belinda's fifth original album, Real. This album follows
in Live Your Life's footsteps, moving Carlisle away from pop and towards
rock. The first single, "It's Too Real (Big Scary Animal)," was a major
hit in Europe and a minor hit here in the States. But, like Life Your Life,
Real was too far from the pop mainstream. The album did not sell well here,
and is considered Belinda's second disappointment.
Belinda Carlisle has switched record labels once again for her latest
album, A Woman and a Man. Belinda now records for Chrysalis. A Woman and
a Man has already generated two UK hits, including "In Too Deep." The album
is a return to the pop style which was always the most popular with Belinda's
fans.
This album shows the incredible range that Belinda possesses. Belinda
easily switches from her standard pop anthems("In Too Deep," "Listen To
Love") to great ballads ("Remember September") to rock tracks reminicient
of Live Your Life ("California," "A Woman and a Man").
A Woman and a Man is now available in the United States! If you can't
find it at your local music store, it can be ordered from a variety of
sources on the web. CD-Now has a great reputation, and provides wonderful
service. Give them a try!
Belinda has found a loyal audience in Europe and Japan. Hopefully she
will return to her rightful place on top of the US charts soon. But thanks
to her fans in Europe and Japan, we can look forward to a future filled
with new music from Belinda.
