Chapter 8 Summary

In this chapter we get a philosophy course, in flash back form, that John had with his old teacher, Mr. Dubois. Also, a soldier who was supposed to be in the training camp but who when AWOL (absent without leave) at the begining of boot camp is brought back to camp Currie, he was arrested for the kidnapping and murder or a small child. Even though he was arrested by civilian authorities, the Mobile Infantry insisted on doing the sentencing themselves because "The M.I. takes care of their own". That soldier was court martialed and sentenced to death. John's regiment's colors had to be draped in black because that individual had brought shame upon them, and there was no music or singing for 30 days.
