Summary
Starship Troopers is written in first person, and is all about the adventures of a teenage boy, named John, who decides to enroll in the military services. The beginning starts out with a description of a battle from further on in the book. From this, the author goes on to explain how this boy got to this point. The majority of the description, and the book, is done in the form the boys ordeals at various boot camps, and descriptions of battles he encounters.
John's friend is going to join the armed forces. John is still debating on whether her should join. If he joins he will be committed to stay in for the minimum of two years and can then get out and become a veteran. When he becomes a veteran he then he is a citizen and has the right to vote. John goes with his friend to sign up, he still doesn't know if he is going to or not. When they get there John meets a girl that he knows that is joining. She is going to be a pilot, so John then decides that he will be a pilot too. Instead if being assigned to be a pilot, John is going to be what he didn't want to be, Military Infantry.
John is assigned to servile different boot camps. The descriptions of these boot camps are very simple and exactly what you would expect of a boot camp. During these boot camps is where the author describes all of the high-tech things that infantrymen use. They has these armored power suits that use jump jets the allow soldiers to easily jump over buildings and hills. When they go into a battle, instead of landing their spaceship they "shoot" the soldiers in capsules out of portals in the ship.
All during the book John has somewhat of flashbacks to his high school "History and Moral Philosophy" class. These flashbacks always seem to go on forever. They are a major section of the book and do give you some since of laws and morals but really don't give you any information or detail.
Right before John can leave the MI and become a veteran, he decides to go with a career in the Military. This means he has to stay in service for at least 20 years. Right after he signs for a career his dad gives his the news that his mother has died and that he is joining the MI too.
John is then sent to battle on the bugs' home planet. The bugs are huge arachnids the are killed only by destroying a nerve sack that is behind their neck. Workers will not bother you at all, but the warriors have lasers and will kill and thing that is not a bug. During the first battle, all of John superior officers are killed and John is forced to take control of his team. This battle and all of the ones following are very basic and are very easy to follow. Human vs. Bugs, Bugs kill some humans, but humans always win. I really think that the author could have been a lot more descriptive of the battles. A simple battle is ok for a book but it needs to be somewhat developed. One of the more interesting parts of the battle is when John and his team go underground in a bug hole to find another team that has went in looking for bugs to kill.
As for the ending--well, i guess you'll have to read it for yourself. But in the end John does get what he was always wanting throughout his military service. Read the book to find out what it is.
