All Marvel Characters are the property of Marvel. Jake and his family are my own creation. I'm not trying to make any money off this, I just love writing. So, if you want to write a fanfic involving Jake or his family, you need my permission first.
My name is Jake Murray. I'm a mutant. Yeah,
that's right. I found out just three years ago, when I totally spazzed out
in the boys' bathroom. I was eleven.
I remember it pretty well. This wierd glow started emenating from my entire
body while I was in there. I crumpled to my knees, screaming. I was sure
I was going to die. This glow was strangely warm. I was on fire. I ran to
the sink, trying to put it out. The water didn't work.
I screamed louder. "Help!" No responses came. I was horrified.
The glow got more intense, and then....
BOOM!
A beam of light blasted from my chest, burning up my whole shirt. I was knocked
into one of the stalls, and almost out cold.
"Unh!"
I heard footsteps, and then the door opened.
"Jacob Adam Murray!"
Uh-oh. She used my full name. I was in trouble. "Yes'm?" I said, barely
audible.
"What happened?"
"I don't know." Blood dripped onto the ceramic tile. "Just get me to a
doctor."
I went straight to the hospital that day. I was in the emergency room. They
were really confused when I told them my story.
"What the heck went on? The kid and the teacher say the kid blasted himself
into the commode!"
"We better take him to an expert."
By that afternoon, I was in the hospital's lab, bandaged up. The glow was
back, lighting my whole body, making me look like an angel, I guess. I could
hear my parents talking to a doctor nearby.
"Mr. Murray, Mrs. Murray, I'm afraid I have some news that might shock
you."
My dad spoke first. "What does that mean?"
"What happened to our son?"
The doctor took his glasses off, and then wiped them on his shirt. The people
around me were strapping my wrists and ankles to the table. Not a good
sign.
"Little Jake......Is a mutant."
"What?" my dad yelled. I was pretty tense myself. "My son?"
"Mr. Murray, it's all just a genetic mistake. See, Jake's DNA..."
"DNA nothing!" He turned to my mother. "This is your fault, you know that?"
"What? My fault?" Then they started fighting. I started crying.
"Dad, leave her alone," I said.
"You stay out of this, you little freak!" I gasped. Freak? I was his son!
"Daddy?" Tears ran down my cheeks. He ran out of the room angrily.
Mom walked over next to the bench, and started rubbing my head. I was still
in tears. "Daddy?" I said again.
The doctors performed all sorts of tests on me. I was too scared to so much
as move. But Mom was by my side the whole time.
They strapped some sort of collar around my neck. It didn't choke me, but
it was scary. I watched the glow die down, and then it was gone.
My mom hated the collar, though. "What is that thing?"
"It's so we can examine Jake without his powers going wild. It's harmless."
"Take it off."
He shrugged. He wouldn't budge. It just stayed on.
Mom stayed by me, a worried look on her face. "It'll be okay, Jake. Just
relax."
I didn't leave the hospital for two more days.
When we did leave, we went straight back to the house, to find Dad wasn't
there. That was strange. I knew he and Mom had been fighting for years now,
but I didn't think it would go this far! Dad had moved out!
"Where'd Dad go?" I asked like a kid.
"I don't know, Baby." We later found out he'd gone to live with his mom in
Detroit. That left no one to take care of the house and me, but Mom.
She pulled it off nicely over the years, I think.
It was a while before the divorce papers reached our home in Phoenix. At
least three or four months. But we were both served with a summons for the
11th of July. It was 2008, and I was 12.
I arrived at the courthouse with Mom right on time. My dad's hearing was
almost over.
I overheard this:
"So you've contacted a lawyer?"
"Yeah, your Honor. I have."
"And you've taken time out to think about the boy's future, acedemically
speaking?"
"Yeah."
"And..."
"Look, your Honor. I know all this stuff. But I just want you to know that
I realize this. The kid ain't mine anymore. I ain't having a mutant in my
family."
My mom heard this, and barged in. "You sick excuse for a human being! How
can you just abandon you own son? Your own flesh and blood.?"
"Simple, Lady. He's all yours now."
Then I came in. "Dad?" He ignored me. "Dad?"
Then he said something that made my blood run cold. "Your dad ain't here,
kid."
He walked out, and my mom and I were alone with the judge. I dropped to my
knees, covering my eyes with my fists. And started crying.
I never saw my father again.
