"This court pronounces you guilty." the judge intoned "Sentencing will be scheduled for November 12. Court is adjourned!" With that the judge slammed his gavel ending the case. In the courtroom, Lee Crane stood and went over to great Chip Morton.
He clapped him on the shoulder and said: "That was great work Chip!"
"Thanks Lee," the Exec replied while gathering his things, "and thanks for picking me up."
"Wouldn't have missed this for the world. How did you ever figure out that Standish was the one who stole Lucius' research specimens?"
The two men began walking out of the courtroom amid the bustle of changing cases. Once out in the hallway, Chip finally answered.
"Well, remember when we found the lab broken into and one of the two tanks of specimens missing?"
"Yes, it was just as the night watch was coming on."
"Right. That meant that is could only have been someone from the day watch or the evening watch." Chip said while opening the door that led them out to the street.
"The Commodore has been working on the intelligence of migratory fish. He had found that some of them could be taught to talk, but only in a sing-song sort of way."
"I still don't believe that!" Lee said guiding Mr. Morton down the street.
"Well, you'd better. I certainly wouldn't doubt him, any more than I would doubt the Admiral!"
"True. OK, so I stand corrected, but what does that have to do with Standish?"
"Well, only a few crewmen outside of the Admiral, you, and me have the entry code to get into the Commodore's lab. Since there was no sign of a forced entry, the time of the break-in limited the range of suspects to just two people: Clark and Standish."
Turning the corner and heading toward the waiting NIMR limousine, Crane replied: "I'd have hated to find out it was Clark. He's clumsy, but no thief!"
"Amen to that! Well, I was standing in the lab wondering out loud who it could have been, which shift, day, or evening, when the fish told me."
"The fish told you! How?" asked Lee incredulously, leaning against the open limo door.
