1963-1966: The Doctor was played by William Hartnell for 134 episodes.
1963: The Daleks made their series debut in December. They were created by Terry Nation.
1966: The Cybermen first appeared in October.
1966-1969: The Doctor was played by Patrick Troughton for 119 episodes.
1970-1974: Jon Pertwee took the helm as the latest reincarnation of the Doctor. The first of his 128 episodes, Spearhead from Space, was the first Doctor Who to be broadcasted in colour.
1974-1981: Tom Baker took over as the fourth Doctor appearing in 172 episodes.
1975: William Hartnell died in April after an illness. He was aged 67.
1977: The robot dog, K-9, appeared in The Invisible Enemy in October.
1978: The Stories of Blood was the serie's 100th story when it was released in October. This was the serie's 15th anniversary year.
1982-1984: Peter Davison played the fifth Doctor for 69 episodes.
1984-1986: The sixth Doctor is played by Colin Baker for 31 episodes.
1987-1989: Sylvester McCoy was the last TV Doctor (at this point). He played in 42 episodes with a brief appearance in the 1996 movie.
1996: Jon Pertwee died on 20th May in Connecticut. He was aged 76.
1996: The Doctor Who movie screened in July with Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor and Eric Roberts as the Master.
