William T. Riker

William Thomas Riker. "The Icarus Factor" (TNG) establishes that Riker had not seen his father for 15 years prior to the episode (2365), and that he was 15 years old at the time his father left him, suggesting a birth date of 2335.

Riker served aboard the Starship Hood under the command of Captain Robert DeSoto prior to his assignment to the Enterprise-D ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]). His service aboard the Hood would have been sometime after his graduation from Startleet Academy, probably around 2357, and 2364, the date for "Farpoint." Prior to the Hood, he served aboard the USS. Potemkin as a lieutenant ("Peak Performance" [TNG]), although little has been established to determine a date for this. Riker was also stationed on the planet Betazed prior to his Enterpries - D assignment ("Menage a Troi" [TNG]).

At some point during his service aboard the Hood, Riker, as first officer, refused to allow Captain DeSoto to beam down to planet Altair III, citing the danger involved. While DeSoto apparently disagreed with Riker's judgment, Riker was acting in accordance with his duty to protect the life of his captain from unnecessary risk ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]).

The relationship between Will Riker and Deanna Troi. Some years prior to Star Trek: The Next Generation's first sea- son, Riker served on Troi's home planet of Betazed. At that time they became romantically involved, and Troi still occasionally calls him Imzadi which is Betazoid for "beloved," even though both Troi and Riker had subsequent relationships with other people. Neither the exact dates nor the specifics of this relationship have been given, although "Menage a Troi" (TN G) establishes that Riker was a junior lieutenant assigned to Betazed and that Troi was a psychology student at the time.
