Later that evening, they assembled in the Damon living room ready to fight.
"Okay, let's go over everyone's assignments one more time." General Damon paced in front of the couch where everyone was sitting. "Megabyte, you and Ami find the cell block and see if they're holding anyone else. Jade and Gabrielle, I want you to locate the field generator and disable it. As soon as you do, teleport to Megabyte's team and help them. Adam, you're coming with Frank and me. I want you to act as relay between us and the other Tomorrow People. Got it?" Everyone nodded. "Good. Let's go. The team is waiting for us."
Everyone filed out to the van and General Damon drove to the meeting point.
//Megabyte, why don't we just teleport there?// Gabrielle asked.
//My dad gets really anxious right before these things. It's better if we just let him drive. It'll keep him sane.// He put his arm around her and she leaned into him. //Don't worry. Everything will be fine.//
//I'm not. I'm just angry.// She smiled sadly.
//Why?//
//These people think that they can just come into our lives and destroy them. Who gave them the right play God?// A tear rolled down her cheek and Megabyte wiped it away.
"Okay, we're here. Everyone out." General Damon shut off the van and hopped out. The teens followed him. They met up with the team leader who gave command over to General Damon. "All right. Gabrielle, you and Jade are going to teleport into the grounds. From there, proceed to the field generator and disable it. Everyone else will follow on my mark. Good luck, girls."
//Gabri . . . //
//Yeah, Megabyte?// She turned to him.
//Be careful.// He leaned over her tanned face and kissed her very softly.
//I will.// With that thought she and Jade were gone.
They reappeared in a grove of trees fifty paces from the building. Jade called to Adam. //How close are we?//
//According to these plans, it looks about a hundred yards to the room with the generator.//
//Right.//
They crept over to the nearest door. Looking around, Gabrielle popped open the lock and the girls went inside.
"My ears hurt." Jade whispered to her.
"That's the field. It's getting worse. We must be close to the generator." Gabrielle looked in a room and saw a large humming machine. "Wait. That's got to be it."
Jade went over to the machine and touched it. "It feels evil." She shivered
Gabrielle pulled off a side panel. Jade watched over her shoulder. "Ready?"
Jade nodded and Gabrielle reached for the first wire.
Ami and Megabyte moved silently down the hall looking in each door they found. All the rooms were empty and they began to head back out.
Outside, the team was rounding up Unit Red agents. General Damon was barking orders while Adam listened for any sign of the others.
All of a sudden, they felt their ears pop and Adam could feel the others. "General, the generator is down."
"Good. Tell them to get out of there."
"All right. We did it!" Jade jumped up in excitement. Broken wires spilled from the side of the generator.
"Stop right where you are." A deep voice came from behind them. "Turn around very slowly."
They turned to face the man. Gabrielle put her hands up when she saw he was holding a gun. "This place is surrounded. There's nothing you can do."
//Everyone teleport out of there now.// Adam's voice sounded in their heads.
"Oh really? I think you two are still very much alone." The man pointed his gun at Jade and fired. Gabrielle shoved her out of the way and felt a bullet enter her right sidejust as the two girls teleported out of the room.
They appeared next to General Damon and Ami. Megabyte and Adam stood off to the side talking to Frank. Jade jumped up.
"Gabrielle saved my life! This guy was going to shoot me and she pushed me out of the way." She told General Damon.
Gabrielle leaned against a tree, her breath coming in sharp pains. Slowly she slid down the trunk of the tree and pulled up her shirt. Blood was oozing slowly from the bullet wound just below her ribs on her right side.
//Gabrielle? Are you all right?// Adam came over to her and squatted down. He touched her shoulder.
She shook her head and bit her lip as another wave of pain hit her. This time the other Tomorrow People, also feeling her pain, looked over at her. "I've been shot. Adam, I think it's pretty bad."
"General Damon! Gabrielle's been shot!" He called. She passed out and Adam gathered her into his arms and carried her over to the van. Megabyte ran over to them and touched Gabrielle's side. His fingers came away bloody.
General Damon looked at them. "Get her to St. Stefan's Hospital now. Tell them you're with Worldex and you need to see Doctor Berns."
The boys nodded and teleported just outside the ER doors. They ran inside and Megabyte grabbed the nearest nurse.
"We need to see Dr. Burns. My dad works for Worldex and Gabrielle's been shot. He told us to come here." Megabyte frantically relayed the message to her.
The nurse nodded. "Okay. Put her on that stretcher and I'll page Dr. Burns."
Adam set Gabrielle down and held her hand. Megabyte held the other one. Gabrielle was fading in and out of conciseness. A tall man in blue scrubs came running down the hall.
"Is this the girl?"
Both boys nodded wordlessly.
"Get her into trauma one. We've got to stop the bleeding," he yelled to the nurse and other staff around him. To the boys he said, "You're going to need to fill out some paperwork. The receptionist can give you the forms while she's being treated."
Dr. Burns left, running down the hall in the direction they took Gabrielle. Adam looked at Megabyte. "Go sit down. I'll get the forms."
Slowly Megabyte headed to the waiting room. A moment later, Ami, Jade, and his father came running through the emergency room doors.
"How is she?" His dad took a seat next to him.
"I don't know. They just took her in." He sighed. "Dad, I don't want her to die."
"I know, Megabyte. I know." He put his arm around his son.
Several hours later, Dr. Burns stepped into the waiting room. "General Damon. Kids. We had to do a lot of work to repair the damage the bullet did to her right lung. A few of her ribs were cracked from the impact, and she's going to have some trouble breathing for a while, but she's alive and awake. She wants to see you, Megabyte." He smiled as the teens hugged each other.
Megabyte jumped up and followed the doctor into the hall. "Now don't forget, she's just woken up from the anesthetic, so she might be a bit groggy or incoherent. Don't worry though, she should be just fine." He opened a door and Megabyte stepped inside.
"Megabyte?" The voice from the bed sounded weak and tired.
"Gabrielle, it's me." He sat in the chair next to her bed. "I was so scared. The doctor says you're going to be fine."
She nodded. "It hurts to breathe."
"The bullet put a hole in your lung but they fixed it. Before you know it you'll be good as new." He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "I'm going to go and let you get some sleep."
She held onto his hand. "Could you stay? Until I fall asleep?"
He looked down at her. "All right."
A half hour later, Megabyte stepped into the waiting room. Four expectant faces looked up at him.
"She's going to be fine. Sleeping right now. We might as well go home for a while." He told them.
General Damon stood up. "We all need some rest and something to eat. Let's go home."
Everyone nodded in agreement and they left the Emergency Room.
