Alien vs. Predator: Prey

by Steve Perry and Stephani Perry

Machiko Noguchi is assigned to supervise a ranch colony on the planet of Ryushi. A ship is coming to the barren, hot planet to pick up the first shipment of rhynth, the animal being ranched. Little is it known to the colonist of this planet that an alien race known as the Predators are landing on the planet to train their young warriors by spawning hellish insect-like creatures (only a billion times more deadly) simply called Aliens. First, the dead body of one of the alien larva is found. Then a family on the outskirts of town is massacred. Then a Predator near to death is brought into the medical center. Then all hell breaks loose. Who will win the deadly battle that is about to ensue? If you want to know, read the book.

Review

The plot in this book is great. It pits three different races against each other, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The Aliens are stupid and strong, the Predators are strong and intelligent, and the humans are intelligent but weaker than the other two.

The chapters alternate between different characters' points of views. Usually it is just between Machiko and Dachande, the Predator she befriends, but some other characters have their own chapters.

The inter-species communication between Dachande and Machiko is quite interesting. I can imagine these two wondering what the hell the other is saying and what their body language means. The Predator language contains words that are most likely impossible for a human to pronounce.

Their is tons of action in this book, most of it is pretty gory. I would say that if it were made into a movie it would have more violence than any Alien or Predator movie (except maybe Alien 4). When you combine these two very savage characters you're just asking for something volatile.

Steve and Stephani Perry did an awesome job on this book and I highly recommend it.

Other Thoughts

This is definitely one cool book. The story, as you can tell from above, is pretty wicked. Aliens and Predators are my two favorite science fiction characters; and I was glad when I found this at the book store. Let me give you a fair warning though- this book is pretty violent. As cool as it would be to make it a movie it would prbably be rated NC-17, at least how I imagine the action to be. I think I'll go and read this book again right now.
