Scully was beginning to feel very lightheaded. She was losing a lot of blood. She could no longer force herself to look down at the wound. She needed whatever strength she had left. For the first time since she was kidnapped, she wasn’t the least bit scared. She was going to die, yes that was fact now, but Mulder was the one looking for her. He could find her when no one else could. Her head was swimming. I just wish I could see him one last time…
They arrived at
Captain Whitaker’s home at 3:14. Detective Jenkins was there to meet them.
“What took you
so long?” she called out.
“Damn traffic
was so backed up,” Mulder answered.
She nodded and
said, “Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we found
our police officers buried in the barn floor. The bad news is that we still
haven’t found your partner.”
“Keep looking.”
“Yes, sir.”
Mulder turned
to Whitaker. “Where is she?”
He smiled. “Why
should I tell you?”
Mulder knocked
him to the ground, pulled out his gun, and pointed it at Whitaker’s foot.
“If you don’t I’ll blow off one of your toes. Then I’ll ask you again.
If the answer is no again, I’ll blow off another. And another and another,
till all ten of them are gone. Then I’ll start with your fingers. Now,
I’ll ask you again. Where is she?”
“You won’t fire.
You can’t.”
“I’ll count to
three. One…”
“You won’t do
it.”
“Two… Three…”
“I’ll never-”
Mulder fired.
Yelling in agony, Whitaker tried to get away, but Mulder held him down
with a foot. “I’ll ask you again. Where is she?”
“You’re crazy!
Someone help!”
“Where is she?”
“I won’t tell
you!”
He fired again.
Whitaker yelled out once more. “Where is she?!”
“My brother took
her somewhere! He wanted to take her somewhere away from here so that if
my house was searched, she wouldn’t be found!”
“Then, where
is she?!”
“I don’t know!
He hasn’t told me!”
“If you’re lying…”
“I swear! I don’t
know! He was supposed to call me so I could meet him somewhere! I don’t
know!… I really don’t!”
“I think he’s
telling the truth, sir.” Detective Jenkins said quietly.
Mulder nodded.
“Take him to a paramedic or something,” he said to the two agents.
“Sure, Agent
Mulder,” They carried him away.
“That was a bit
harsh, don’t you think?” Detective Jenkins asked. “Where’d you come up
with that?”
“I saw it in
a movie once.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Guarding Tess.
Nicholas Cage. Funny movie.”
She smiled.
Mulder turned
to her and walked toward the house with her. “So, how are they?”
“Well, the deputy’s
doing okay… her condition’s stable, at least. I wish I could say the same
about my partner.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. At
least if she dies, she’ll die comfortably… I want to thank you for your
help. Without you, we would have never found her. Rest assured, I’ll help
you find your partner. It’s the least I could do.”
“You’re welcome,
and thanks. I really appreciate it.”
She gave him
a curious look. “She more than a partner to you, isn’t she.” It wasn’t
a question.
He nodded sadly and stared at the
ground. “She’s one of the very few friends I have and really the only person
I totally trust.”
They entered
the house and went upstairs. “Are you sure that’s all she is to you?”
“What do you
mean?”
“Nothing. Never
mind.” They entered the bedroom. “We’re guessing this is his room.”
