ARRAKIS
Arrakis is the real name on the planet more often called Dune. This planet is the only place in the whole universe where you could find spice Melange. This spice make space-travels possible and make it possible to live longer. It is the most precious thing in the entire universe, and all the three houses want it, plus the emperor. Arrakis does not have any forest or anything like it. Fact is that the entire planet is one large dessert. No one but the Fremens can live in the dessert. SANDWORMS Sandworms are gigantic worms that live under the surface of Dune. They swim in the sand like watersnakes can swim in the water. They are a large problem fore the players when they trie to build their dynasty. The snakes are drawn to heave vibrations like those who come from harvesters and tanks... If a sandworm feel the vibrations of a tank and get to it before it can reach a rockier part, the sandworm will swallow the entire tank and its crew. Therefor one will have to be extra cautious when the 'advisor' warns for worms. In the PC-RPG of Dune you can ride the worms. You call them trough some telepathic power and than they come. It is a very fast and safe (!?) way of transportation. SPICE - MELANGE Spice is the most valuable thing existing in the universe. All houses wants to gain more power, and the best way of doing so is to get in possession of as much spice as possible. Spice makes it possible to make interstellar space travels. It makes it possible to live much longer. It even makes it possible for some to see in the future. The only place in the universe where one can find Melange is on Dune. The Spice is the foundation of the Empire. Without it there wouldn't exist any Empire. In the games you must harvest Spice on the spicefields. Whenever you want to buy something or perhaps build something, it'll cost Spice. Your spiceproduction is the only thing that can keep your house alive. Large harvester harvests spice (see picture). FREMEN Fremens are the native inhabitants of Dune. They are also the only people who can live in the hot Desserts on that planet. To be able to live on Dune they have constructed special suits that do not let any liquid out of the user. It also has an small watertank that provides the user with water through the mouth. The Fremens live in special (cave-like) sietches around on Dune. Their eyes are totally blue (that is the effect of being in contact with Spice). In the PC-RPG you must rally the Fremens in order to crush the Harkonnens. In Dune 2 you will be able to get reinforcements from the Fremens if you build a Palace (that is, if you choose to be the Atreides...). HOUSES In the PC-RPG of Dune there where only two houses: The noble Atreides and the evil Harkonnen. These where each other's opposites. But in Dune 2 The building of a Dynasty another house was introduced. No one had seen the house of Ordos before. Now when there were three houses that all wanted the control over Dune, battles where intensified. Read more about the Houses here! In the reality (the books) there are several more houses than just two or three. Do not forget that the emperor has his own house. But there are also the uncountable houses Minor. If you have not already understood it, the world of Dune is a very complex thing to tell about. |
