The Lady Sif was meant to be one of the Aesir of 2099 created by Avatarr to control the break-out of heroism in the futureverse. But unfortuantely, something in her programming wasn't quite right, and she was never released. Sif's programming was never completed, or perhaps her body rejected the process used to transform the humans into "gods." As of now, it hasn't been revealed. Perhaps Avatarr's comments to Thor, who finds Sif in a glass chamber in the Fall of the Hammer can better illustrate it: "You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs."
Upon defending the Fenris against the Vulture's Freakers, the Mighty Thor traveled to Alchemax in order to revenge the "death" of his true love. Instead of finding Avataar and the body of his love encased in glass, Thor found the ruins of Alchemax, and among them a very confused Sif. He took her back to Downtown where Kabal treated her. She quickly recovered and immediately fell in love with the God of Thunder, just as she was programmed. She is now fulfilling her original role as Thor's lover, and the "darling" of the masses.
She has also been fighting along side Thor. She was part of the group that Scout led against Lord Tyme, and she helped fight against an army of Specialists, and with the combined might of the Scout and Kabal managed to defeat Kron Stone, aka, Venom!!!
