This Episode Of The Silver Surfer
"Return to Zenn-La"
The eternal battle between the Kree & the Skrull empires rages on! The
Silver Surfer finds himself in caught in the maelstrom of the melee once again.
A plea for help on a message beam falls on the deaf ears of the combatants.
Again the Surfer's heart urges him to help the needy. He arrives at a planet
besieged with energy draining crystals. As always he tries brute power first,
which fails (how unexpected![sneer]). The lesson he learned with the Kree
collars has not been wasted upon him however. Letting the crystals gorge
themselves upon his power cosmic until they self destruct from their
gluttony!
The smoke clears. The Surfer finds himself on Zenn-La!!!???? He hears the
voice of his beloved Shalla Bal and is welcomed by all of his friends from his
past existence as Norrin Radd! A regular ticker tape parade ensues. The Surfer
is confused with the ease of his quest's end. Strangely Shalla Bal assures
Silvarado of her legitimacy, though it was never questioned or challenged, and
says she can answer any question of their past together. When our hero relates
the fate of The Master he is immediatly named The New Master. He questions the
wisdom of such blind devotion. Shalla Bal reminisces over Norrin Radds longing
for the struggles and conflicts of Zenn-La's past. Suddenly there is conflict!
A friend, who mere moments ago was ardent supporter, is now a fierce foe and
challenges The Surfer to trial by combat. To make things fair The Surfer lays
aside his power cosmic and becomes once again Norrin Radd. In the midst of the
challenge both are threatened by catastrophe. Norri!
n regrets laying aside the power cosmic but calls to his board nostalgically
anyway. The Board comes & resuces the two.
The Surfer realizes he never laid aside his power cosmic, that he has been
decieved. This is not Zenn-La but Ego in disguise.
Ego the passive-aggressive planet! Lonely and emotionally needy Ego as
pretended to be what he is not! (Many people do this) Ego has latched on to the
Surfer seeking protection & safety in their relationship. Ego promises that
which he can not deliver, the end of the Surfer's quest & the peace and love of
Shalla Bal's arms. Ego has stooped to deception & coercion to keep the Surfer
in the relationship.
The Surfer so longs for acceptance and unconditional love that he accepts
this illusion at first. He denies his own knowledge of self and tries to live
in the past. But as I have said before "you can never go home again" nor can
you ever return to the self you were before life experience has changed you!
Thus though he thinks he is once again merely Norrin Radd he is in reality now
& forever more the Silver Surfer!
In the begining of the episode The Surfer gives his power cosmic to the
crystals and thus over comes their draining effect on him! The end of this
episode mirrors it's begining! The Surfer attacks Ego at first to gain his
freedom then in an unselfish & giving act rescues him. Very much like rescuing
the Wanderers! (cosmic power points for the repetition of theme!) The Surfer
(like all humanity) is empowered by his selfless acts of altruism, by giving to
others without expectation of recompense we reap the ultimate in spiritual
growth & development!
Ego lets the Surfer go after this, learning from the experience! Ego
promises to help the Surfer in his time of need (which looks like it is coming
soon!).
The Begining of The End!!!
We see the a secondary plot line starting in this episode! Eternity &
Infinity are "feeling the burn" from Thanos' insane scheme to destroy the
Universe!! Eternity tells his sister Infinity to hold on, their champion the
Silver Surfer will prevail! The mad titan Thanos has created a device which
will reverse time to a point before the universe came into being, thus
destroying it & bringing the ultimate in chaos! Thanos hopes this will gain him
the acceptance of his Lady Chaos at long last! (somehow I think she will
continue to ignore him no matter his deeds! And besides what the mad titan
fails to realize with no universe there is no chaos! pehaps this may actually
be the ultimate in order!)
Will The champion of Eternity & Infinity be up to the task of saving the
universe from being crushed by the cruel cosmic catastrophe planed by Evil
Thanos? What secret plans do Eternity & Infinity have for the Surfer's success?

Nit picks!!!
1. In the begining of this episode The Surfer states that he was seeking
rest from his recent Kree encounter! Is there a missing episode? His last Kree
encounter was with Pip the troll! What happened there?
2. Infinity had stated in the past that the surfer indeed had much
potential but still had much growth left before he was ready! It seems he still
has some growing to do before he is ready for the awesome task these twin
cosmic entities plan him to accomplish! I would have liked to see more episodes
before this "final conflict" began!
3. Thanos sounded sooo whiney in this episode! I know unrequited love is a
bitch but where is the malice in his voice and heart? Thanos feels unloved &
wants the universe to suffer as he suffers! I didn't hear that in the voice
this episode!
But all in all a fairly good episode! Not much to say against it but it was
not as good as the last 2 episodes but better than "Anti-bodies!"
I don't give the episodes letter grades! Grades are so artificial! But this
was medium in the quality of the series in my opinion! I will give cosmic power
points for the return of Ego & his foreshadowed next appearance!
