All that remained of the X- Files were a few maps of the solar system on the walls and the message they had written on the wall. A note to anyone working in the basement in the future. All their dreams and hopes gone with one notice. Everything they had been for the past five years, gone. Just like that. They were finally shut down, this time for good. No more second chances. No more warnings. "So this is it. After everything we've seen, all we've done, it's ending like this," he finally said. "It's not so bad Mulder. We're still alive. I'd say that's a good ending," she admitted. "So OptimisticScully comes out." She grinned. Standing next to him for a while she finally spoke, "I'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning. Don't be late." She turned towards the door and started walking. "Hey Scully?" She turned to face him. "Yeah Mulder?" "You want to get together tonight?" "Sure, be at my place at 7:30. All I have is Yoo Hoo and Cheerios so if you want food you'd better pick something up." "I'll be over at 7:30." "I'll see ya then." She took one more glance back and walked out. Walked out of her life, her whole life for the past five years was spent in this basement. Sharing coffee and ideas with Mulder. She had nothing to show for those years. No certificate of a job well done. No proof of anything. 10:38 p.m. Dana Scully's apartment Except for a few pillows and blankets the room was bare. All her stuff had been shipped to Chicago the week before. She had one pair of pajamas, jeans and a t-shirt. No pictures, nothing to show that Dana Scully had once inhabited the apartment. The two agents sat on the bare floor, empty pizza box beside them, two empty bottles of wine in the trash and a half empty one in the females hand. "Hey Scully, what do you think would have happened if we had met before the X- Files?" "Who knows," she took another sip of the wine, "We'd probably still be best friends." "You think we would have crossed the line?" "Maybe. It depends." "On what?" "Lots of stuff." "Like what?" "For one thing, you would've had to have been in town more often." "Oh." "Mulder, I'm getting a little tired. How about we call it a night?" "Sure thing." He rose to his feet, stumbling when he trued to walk. "Mulder, I don't think that you're in any shape to be driving. Why don't you sleep here?" "Is that a line?" "Yeah Mulder, it's a line. After five years of working with you I'm finally hitting on you." "Just checking." Scully got up and grabbed the two pillows and blankets from the bedroom. Going into her bedroom she quickly changed. Coming back into the living room she found Mulder fast asleep in his boxers. Black silk boxers to be exact. Crawling under the covers she lay close to him, soon she too was asleep. His arms went around her. It was fitting that was how they should spend their last night together. Washington, D.C. International Airport Gate 46 11:37 a.m. "Last call for American Airlines D.C. to Chicago," the speaker blared. She stood up and spoke, "I guess this is it." "Yeah." He walked next to her to the gate. "I'd better go." She started down the catwalk, she paused then turned around. "Mulder?" "Yeah Scully?" "I just wanted you to know that I would've crossed the line if you wanted to. Even though you're a pain in my ass sometimes and you make a mess with your sunflower seeds I like you a whole lot. Mulder, I like you so much that if you were to hug me in public I wouldn't pull away." He ran towards her and hugged her close to him. Resting his chin on her head and smiled. He whispered, "Promise to write?" "Yeah, I'll call you when I get to Chicago. =91K?" "Okay. I'll miss you Scully." "I'll miss you too Mulder." "Promise?" "Promise. I got to go. The plane is going to leave without me." As she pulled away he pulled her back and kissed her on the lips. He whispered into her hair, "I would've crossed the line too." She began to walk, before she had taken the tenth step he called out, "Love you Scully!" She turned back and flashed a siren smile then whispered, "Love you too Mulder." She walked down the catwalk and occasionally looked back until she was out of sight. Sadly, he turned around and started walking. Reaching the end of the carpet and the beginning of the tile he saw Margaret Scully. Weakly smiling he started over towards her. She handed him an envelope. "Get on the plane Fox."
