July 29 and August 5

Oni Double Feature #6 + 7 - I picked this set up for the Neil Gaimen story line, and have been impressed so far.  Issue six had part two of a story that had started in issue 5, so I really couldn't get into it without buying yet another issue.  However, issue 7 had a great little story that had nothing to do with nothing, but it was told well.  The story is of a baker with mob ties and an Irish woman making a delivery for him.  Nothing more, nothing less (well a bit more, I guess), but a nice little story.  The Neil Gaimen story (of which I have parts one and two, and am awaiting three) was really good.  The main character suffers from lycanthropy, and lives in the strangest little New England town.  I'm still not sure what's going on, but the second part concluded with a showdown between our wolf friend and the forces of darkness...

Martian Manhunter #0 - This is one of those books that I'm going to have to give some time.  The Martian Manhunter is a great character, and certainly deserving of his own book, but it has to be done well.  This issue which tells the origin of the character did have me scratching my head in a few places.  I had always thought that things were a bit different before, but then that was pre-Zero Hour, and it wouldn't surprise me if J'onn J'onzz was ignored in that continuity reboot.  As far as the book goes, the writing was good, the art was nice, and the story was great.  Lets just hope things stay good.

New Gods Secret Files and Origins #1 - I've bought or read every Secret Files produced so far, and personally I think they have been worth it.  The stories may not be that great in them, but they are great introductions to characters that readers may not be familiar with.  This one was decent, overall, but the real reason I bought it was because I wanted to know more about the New Gods.  Unfortunately, the biography sections were a bit skimpy.  Sure I learned a lot about Highfather and Darkseid, but the supporting cast bios were woefully uninformative (particularly the denziens of Apokalips).  I support the idea of the Secret Files series, but I think that the execution needs to be made a bit better.  These books aren't for people that are currently reading the series, they're for people that are curious about the series.  This fact has been ignored in far too many of the writers, and only a few have managed to accomplish the purpose of the book.

Tangent Comics - This year, the Tangent series seems to have sold out, and not just in doing the "Big Names," but also in trying to cash in on a great concept with a poor execution.  The titles this year were as follows: Nightwing: Night Force; The Jokers Wild, The Trials of the Flash, Tales of the Green Lantern, The Superman, The Batman, Wonder Woman, Powergirl and JLA.  A few acutally had some good stuff going, Superman and Wonder Woman were well written and had a great look at a new character.  I enjoyed the Flash, but it wasn't that great, the same with The Joker and Powergirl.  I was HIGHLY dissapointed with JLA and Green Lantern, especially since last year, Green Lantern was the best of the set.  Nightwing did nothing, and the Batman didn't go nearly far enough with a great concept.  When taken as a whole, the series is considerably better, but each individual issue left a lot to be desired.  In the end, I am almost upset that I bought the entire run.  I could have used the money for other purposes.

Wonder Woman Annual #7(?) - I lent this issue out, and can't remember what number it is, but I'll fix that soon enough.  Of the "Ghost" annuals I've read so far, this issue was probably a close second to the Flash annual (which really isn't saying that much).  I enjoy the concept of the annuals this year, characters are, for whatever reason, being haunted by actual ghosts, as well as real life peole they had thought they left behind.  In Wonder Woman's case, it's an old friend who committed suicide several years ago, and a cop that still has a crush on the Amazonian Princess.  The story had a lot going for it, but I think the real reason I was disappointed was because I really don't know the characters that appear here.  There's been a lot of flack lately about DC doing the "concept" annuals, and not doing them well, and so far, this year's annuals are no exeption.  The only thing going for it this year is that there will only be eight annuals released, the core members of the JLA and a JLA annual.  This means that there will be considerably less stories to screw up.

Young Justice #2 - Easily the best thing I picked up in the past two weeks.  It used to be very rare that I would ever laugh out loud at a comic, but now I'll be doing so at least once a month.  This book is witty, full of great pop culture references and still true to the core characters.  I really don't want to give anything away about this book, as I think everyone should be picking it up on a monthly basis.  It's a FUN book, that's all there is to it.  GO GET A COPY NOW!!!  You'll thank me for it later.

Wow, I got a bit editorial in this weeks reviews, sorry about the preaching!!!  I'll catch you next week...
