Planet of Origin | Bajor |
Quadrant | Alpha |
Background | An old culture that flourished more than 25,000 years ago. It's history contained master architects, artisans builders, and philosophers. The level of civilisation declined during Cardassian rule from 2328 to 2369. The Bajora were one of the first of the known races to achieve space flight. They brought their art and architecture to countless other worlds before the Occupation. Over 10 million Bajorans were killed during the Cardassian Occupation. Following the Withdrawal and a period of civil unrest, the people were united under a single Provisional Government which requested Federation assistance in rebuilding their civilization, and in running the space station the Cardassians constructed and left behind. The Federation is currently still operating this station, known as Deep Space Nine. Recently Bajor began an accelerated progress towards full Federation membership, but at the insistence of the Emissary, (DS9 Captain, Benjamin Sisko) they reluctantly signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion to remove themselves from the fighting and the quite real possibility of the destruction of Bajor. |
Editors Notes | Bajorans are a very spiritual people, but have developed an intolerance of Cardassians due to the recent Cardassian occupation of Bajor. The Bajoran sense of spirituality is so strong that they have developed a very strong will due to their faith. Most Bajorans have studied their religion fairly extensively. Also, most Bajorans with a highly-developed faith are also devoted to the rebuilding of their world. |

Planet of Origin | Benzar |
Quadrant | Alpha (assumed) |
Background | Benzar has an atmosphere similar to class M norms, but Benzites in class M environments at one time needed a respiration device to provide supplemental gases for proper respiration. This is no longer required due to advances in Benzite medical technology. |
Editors Notes | They are also noted for their pursuit of knowledge - Benzites excel at science and engineering during Academy studies. They will even occasionally take foolish risks in order to retrieve a particularly rare bit of data. Benzites are excellent at games and computer programming. They are often considered egotistical by human standards. All Benzites from the same geostructure are identical in appearance. A recently admitted Federation member, Benzar citizen Mordock became first the Benzite in Starfleet, winning appointment to Starfleet Academy in 2364. |

Editors Notes | Berengaria was mentioned by Kai Winn in the same breath as Vulcan, Andor, and Earth, implying it is a major member world. We have not seen anything about this world, however, in any canon media. Berengaria VII is mentioned as a neutral world with no sentient species in Shane Johnson's very non-canon work "Worlds of the Federation". |

Planet of Origin | Betazed |
Quadrant | Alpha (assumed) |
Background | Betazed hosted the biennial Trade Agreements Conference in 2366. Current Betazed Federation ambassador is Lwaxana Troi, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed. The University of Betazed, an educational institution of higher learning, is quite obviously galactically renown for studies in psychology. |
Editors Notes | Betazoids are known for their telepathic and empathic abilities.
They generally do not start developing their telepathic skills until puberty,
when the rush of newly-activated hormones serves to activate previously
latent telepathic talents. A few Betazoids are born with telepathic abilities,
but they have to go through a different and very intensive psychological
experience due to their inability to filter out the "noise" created by
normal thoughts.
A few marriages between Betazoids and non-Betazoids have produced children, the best known of whom is Lt. Cmdr. Deanna Troi of the USS Enterprise-D. Children of mixed marriages generally do not get as high a telepathic ability as do full-blooded Betazoids. Lt. Cmdr. Troi only has empathic abilities, although she can communicate telepathically with other Betazoids. The University of Betazed being galactically renown for psychology studies is an assumption. Because of their training in the schools of Betazed, they are rarely xenophobic, and can communicate with most any other race at their level. Because of the unique structures (or shields) of Ferengi, Dopterian, Breen, and some others minds, Betazoids cannot read anything. With the exception of their telepathic abilities, Betazoids are essentially similar to humans in all other respects. |

Planet of Origin | Bolarus IX (at least 9 planets in the system |
Quadrant | Alpha (assumed) |
Background | They evolved from an aquatic race and are still very at home in the water, although they are fully comfortable on land. Bolians are staunch allies of the Federation. Several have risen to positions of great importance in the Federation and in Starfleet. Many turn their liability of racial curiosity into an advantage by occupying research or investigative jobs. They have only recently made peace with the Moropans, a rival race, although this peace is fragile one. |
Editors Notes | A unique feature of the race is that they have a lining on thier tongues thet allow them to injest many forms of poison without damage. Only young females possess any body hair, and that only on their scalps. Perhaps as a consequence for being hairless, a few Bolians display an odd fascination for humanoid hair, and go on to become hairdressers. Mot, on the Enterprise-D, was one such. Of course, the fact that humanoids often tell their hair dressers things they wouldn't tell anyone else hasn't been lost on them... |

Distinguishing Features | Cyborg appearance, robotic arm with interchangable tools. Left eye replaced by eyepiece with laser sight/sensor |
Series | TNG: "?", Voy: "?", ST: FC |
Planet of Origin | |
Quadrant | Delta |
Background | Technological implants make them into a cyborg-type race, with all the advantages and disadvantages that implies. All Borg are linked together through cybernetic networks on board each Borg mothership. The motherships are presumed to maintain a link to the homeworld. Each Borg is specifically modified to perform a specific task. Borg are unaging, immune to poisons, and immune to disease. Borg can be damaged by electromagnetic pulses, but they are -very- adaptable, and can adjust themselves to any form of attack quickly; so much so, that they soon can be virtually immune to that form of attack. |
Editors Notes | 2 forms are known to exist; Collective and Non-Collective. A
race of Cyborg humanoids that search the galaxy assimilating other races
into thier own. By taking the technology from these races they have
become a fearsome species and show little or no sign of slowing thier movement
throughout the galaxy.

(most of these are just mentions not appearances.) |
Planet of Origin | Breen |
Quadrant | Beta (assumed) |
Background | The first mention of the Breen race was in the TNG episode "The Loss",
where it is discovered that Betazoid telepaths have no reading from them
(No appearance). The next mention was as suspects in the destruction
of the SS Vico, and were established to possess cloaking and disrupter
technology. The first actual appearance by a Breen came in ST VI:
The Undiscovered Country. In the Khitomer scenes, a Breen envoy can
be seen crossing the screen in the background. (Not positively identified
for another 5 years until an alien dressed similarly appeared in the DS9
episode "In Purgatory's Shadow" and was identified as a Breen.) In
2366 two Breen warships attacked the Cardassian ship Ravinok then forced
it to crash land on Dozaria where they put the Cardassian and Bajoran crew
and passengers on that ship into a forced labour camp on the surface. The
Breen were encased in refrigeration suits running a forced labor dilithium
mine using DS9: "Indiscretion".
A group of Breen pirates attacked the Bajoran Colony of Free Haven in 2372. The Breen have outposts near the Black Cluster, and have settlements at Portas V near the Demilitarized Zone. The condition of the Breen homeworld was established in 2 DS9 episodes "Crossfire", "Shattered Mirror" where several quotes along the lines of "Colder than a Breen ______" were used. In 2370, a Breen pilot participated in the palio on Deep Space 3. A Breen of unknown identity was replaced by a founder at some unknown date, and the "original" was imprisoned in Internment Camp 371. This brave fellow gave his life by initating an escape from the camp in 2373, shortly after Cardassia joined the Dominion. |
Editors Notes | A Secretive, non-aligned warrior race. Their home planet is a frozen wasteland, which means they cannot tolerate normal planetary temperatures. Known to have cloaking and disrupter technology, thier ships have also been described as "part biologic", they are expert weapons designers, and masters of refrigeration technology. Untrustworthy and secretive they are also one of the few humanoid races with no form of blood for gas circulation. Thier 4-lobed brain is unreadable by telepaths. There is a Romulan warning very appropriate: "never turn your back on a Breen." |

Distinguishing Features | Built-in interface jack to provide them with data directly from most computers |
Series | TNG: "1001001" |
Planet of Origin | Bynaus |
Quadrant | Alpha (assumed) |
Background | A unique Federation member, due to their recently revealed link to their homeworld's computer, without which they cannot survive long. Bynars are heavily linked to their computers, and even speak to each other in a form of computer binary language. They always work in pairs for ease of operations. These pairs are electronically linked through a computer network to each other, and they share thoughts to some degree. This computer network, greatly expanded, serves as a framework for their entire civilization. Bynars learn about their interdependence with computers from a very early age. The implantation of the interface jack, which occurs quite soon after birth, is a sort of christening ceremony for Bynars. Removal of any Bynar from the link to their computer network will cause them injury, and if not replaced within a short period of time, death. They have a very delicate body structure. |
Editors Notes | Bynars are not very physically strong, but they make up for this by being some of the best computer experts in the known galaxy. They also are some of the best mathematicians known to the Federation. They are organized in psychically linked pairs, in addition to being electronically linked. They are considered to be sexless. |
