Plot

Pilot episode for the series. While en route to investigate problems on Farpoint station, the Enterprise meets the mysterious super-powered Q. Q condemns humanity and challenges them to solve the mystery at Farpoint.

NOTE: There are 2 versions of this episode out, a normal episode and a movie version along with episode 2. The movie version includes aditional scenes and small twists, just to make it even better. If you'd like to buy the serie on video then you should look for the movie-version, it's about 5 minutes longer, dosn't look that way when you look at the time, but remember that there are only credits once.

Goofs

  • The computer, giving Riker directions in order to meet Data on the holodeck, tells him the holodeck is the next door on the right. However, Riker turns left and walks into the holodeck.

In-Jokes

  • The military uniform "Q" wears is that of a Marine Corps lieutenant colonel. And if you look closely, his rank, ribbons and badges are all identical to those worn by Lt. Col. Oliver North when he testified at the Iran-Contra hearings in 1986-87, just before "Farpoint" went into production.

Quotes

Picard: "Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before."

Q: "Thou art notified that thy kind hath infiltrated the galaxy too far already. Thou art directed to return to thine own solar system immediately."

Q: "Now go back or thou shalt most certainly die."

Worf: "And now a personal request, sir. Permission to clean up the bridge."

[Picard wants Worf to go to safty]
Worf: "I am a Klingon, sir. For me to seek escape while my captain goes to battle--"
Picard: "You are a Starfleet officer, Lieutenant."
Worf: "Aye, sir."

Picard: "Transmit the following in all languages and in all frequencies: 'We surrender.'"

Q: "You will now answer the charge of being a grievously savage race."

Q: "The prisoners will not be harmed, until they are found guilty."

[Riker has seen the encounter with Q on screen]
Riker: ".... And he calls that a 'little adventure'"

Picard: "Lieutenant, do you intend to blast a hole through the viewer?"

Riker: "You reacted fast, Lieutenant."
Picard: "But futilely."
Worf: "I will learn to do better, sir."

Picard: "We do exactly what we would do if this Q never existed. If we're going to be damned, let's be damned for who we really are."

McCoy: "Have you got some reason you want my atoms scattered all over space, boy?"

McCoy: "Hold it right there, boy! What about my age?"
Data: "Sorry, sir. If that subject troubles you--"
McCoy: "What's so damned troublesome about not having died?"

McCoy: "I don't see no points on your ears, boy, but you sound like a Vulcan."
Data: "No, sir. I am an android."
McCoy: "Almost as bad."
Data: "I thought it was generally accepted, sir, that Vulcans are an advanced and most honorable race."
McCoy: "They are. And also damned annoying at times."

McCoy: "This is a new ship, boy, but she's got the right name. Now you remember that, you hear?"
Data: "I will, sir."
McCoy: "You treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home."

Picard: "If we are going to be dammed, lets be dammed for what we realy are"
