Plot
The Enterprise is in route back to earth to attend a commencement exercises at the academy,
but on the way there they get a call from the commander there, during practices for an
show-off by the NOVA-squadron, the flight-group of the academy, the 5 crafts in the group
has crashed and the pilots including Wesley had to use the emergency transporters to get
out, but one of them, a friend of Wesley didn't make it out, and was killed in the crash.
Wesley got off pretty clean, some minor burns, but when Beverly and Picard arrives at his
room at the academy, he does not want to talk about what had happend, and when the leader
of the flight-team shows up, he asks them to leave, course they have something importaint
to discuss. Picard and Bev leaves a bit confused and Picard decides to seek the groundkeeper
to talk about old times, after a bit of talking Picard asks Boothby about the NOVA-group,
and he replayes that he knows the entire group, and by his tone of voice is it clear that
is not for good things.
Later on the hearing about the accident is begining with Locarno giving his explination
of the crash, there are several unclear points, that none of the others clarify, the cadet
that were flying at the last position claims she didn't see what happend, the assistant
in the hearing wonders as she was less than 10 meters away from the plane with the
missing cadet, the plane that actualy caused the accident. When the leaders of the hearing
won't accept the facts, Locarno comes foreward to explain, he states that the killed
cadet had paniced, and thereby broken the formation the reason for that to be hidden
at the begining of the hearing is that they didn't want to have Joshua remembered as
a cadet who paniced at a critical situation. Admiral Brand accepts the explination for
the time beeing, but states that she finds a lack of judgement among the others by taking
him with them when he wasn't ready for that type of manouvers, the hearing is delayed
until the next day when they hope to have obtained information from the flightrecorder
on board Wesley's plane.
When the hearing is reconvined the pictures from the flightrecorder is displayed, while
Wesley explains what had happend, the recording ends shortly before the crash in the
middle of a loop, but Wes explains they had continued in a diamond-formation until the
crash. The leaders of the hearing then calls up a picture taken by a navigation sattelite
the picture shows clearly that the planes was not in a diamond-formation about 4 seconds
before the crash, Wesley is not capable of finding an explination. After the hearing is
over for the day, Beverly wants to help her son, she wants to back him up, course she
thinks the leaders are trying to ruin his career. Wes looks hard at his mother asking her
to stay out of this, on the Enterprise Picard has asked Data and Geordi to try and find
out what has happend, but they can't find anything special, except Wesley's flightlog
indicates a quite unusual manouver, the opening of a hatch in the engine, a manouvre
that is normaly done at maintanance but has no use in flight. They tells Picard that
it could be possible to make a plasma-dump, but that would be very dangerous as the
engine would enlight the plasma. When Picard hears this he asks Wesley to come to his
office, and shows him a computersimulation of a dangerous formation, a formation that
has been banned by the academy as 5 cadets was killed in an accident many years ago.
Picard acuses Wesley and his friends of lying at the hearing and that they had in fact
not flown in diamondformation, but had tried the manouvre, and that Joshua had paid
the ultimate price for the attempt, he sends Wes away with a statement that if he didn't
tell the truth at the next hearing, then Picard would inform the admiral. Wes returns
scared to the academy and tells Locarno about what Picard knows, Locarno states that
Picard has no evidence and tells Wes to stay calm and not panic at the hearing the
next day.

Goofs
- About 10 minutes in -- Wes goes to the door. The long shot has him
opening the door with his *left hand*. Cut to close up, and the door is
being opened with his *right hand*.
- Also, about 40 minutes in. Wes is talking to [someone] in his quarters.
From behind, his hands are in one position, and when we cut to the front,
they're in another position, obviously different.
