An interesting, if incidental, addition to the roster of "Next Generation"
aliens was the appearance of a Cytherian in the fourth season episode "The�
Nth Degree". The Cytherian appeared on the bridge through something not
unlike a hologram of just a bearded head. A Cytherian probe had altered the
mind of engineering specialist Barclay and given him the knowledge to take
the crew to the center of the galaxy - where, in "Star Trek V: The Final
Frontier," Captain Kirk and the crew of the NCC-1701-A encountered a similar
projection of a far less benevolent being intent on taking over the
Enterprise and traveling back to Federation space in the guise of God. No one
has said for certain wether the godlike being in "Star Trek V" could have
been another Cytherian or not, but the possibility is intriguing and would
be another link of continuity between the two generations of "Star Trek."
The Cyntherian are obviously scientists who peacefully explores the galaxy, not
by traveling around, but by asking others to come a visit them to exchange
know-how. They are clearly more advanced than any other lifeforms we have seen
on TNG (Perhaps with the exception of 'Q'). And are capable of transporting
ships over huge distances in no time. They also posesses a form of propulsion
that is compleatly unknown to the federation experts, as proven when the Enterprise
finds the probe, that later folows them and attempts to take over the shuttle, fails
but takes on Barcley instead..
