Black Powder

The chemicals should be ground into a fine powder SEPARATELY! with a mortar and pestle. If gunpowder is ignited in the open,it burns fiercely, but if in a closed space it builds up pressure from the released gases and can explode the container. Gunpowder works like this: the Potassium nitrate oxidizes the charcoal and sulfur, which then burn. Carbon dioxide and Sulfur dioxide are the gases released.

Smoke Formulas

Sugar Smoke--can be made into a solid by heating sugar and small amount of water over a stove.when it starts to boil,remove from heat and pour in the Potassium nitrate, stir, and pour into a holder. Do in small amount because the mixture won't dry completly. I had a film canister filled with the stuff and it was hard in the top but when lit, the thing only burned until it reached the rest that was completly wet.

Nitro Cellulose

Place 250ml beaker in the ice bath, add 70ml sulfuric acid, 30ml nitric acid. Divide cotton into .7g pieces. With tongs, immerse each piece in the acid solution for 1 minute. Next rinse each piece in 3 successive baths of 500ml water. If it bubbles, rinse in water once more until no bubbles occur. Squeeze dry and spread on paper towels to dry overnight.
