In 1995, research began in the use of "sleeper ships" to transport the first humans to destinations such as Mars (Sol IV) without having to carry many supplies. The DY-100 was the first class of these ships. One of the first, experimental models of this ship class, the S.S. Botany Bay earned the distinction of being the ship stolen by Khan Noonian Singh and his followers in order that they could escape Earth after their reign in the Eugenics War.
The DY-100 class of ships was the first mass produced ship design. Most of them were used to ferry supplies from Earth to the first Lunar Colonies. The usefullness of the sleeper ship types of of DY-100 ships came to an end when advances in fusion research allowed for faster travel to other planets.
The DY-100 class of ships and its derivatives, such as the DY-500, resembled the Terran oceangoing submarines of the time. It consisted of a long, cylindrical main body with a conning tower placed towards the conical, forward end. The rear, engineering section varied from ship to ship sometimes, depending on advances in current technology. Some were fitted with strap on booster rockets and maneuvering fins for launch from Earth's surface. The DY-100's were also equipped with removeable, interchangeable cargo modules which allowed for a wide variety of missions.
The following specifications apply to the S.S. Botany Bay:
