U.S.S. Unicorn: Handbook

Membership Handbook, it should contain everything you need to know, if not e-mail me. Go to Membership Application

1.0 Introduction

The Membership Handbook is designed to provide you with all the information you'll need to be an effective member of the USS Unicorn. I've given the Handbook an easy to follow and logical layout. In the first sections you'll find information on how to become a member of the USS Unicorn. Later in the Handbook I've given you the information needed to take part in the USS Unicorn as a new member.

2.0 Getting Started

Before you begin gaming as a USS Unicorn Member there are several steps you must first complete. The first of these steps is to actually become a Member of the USS Unicorn. The 2.X sections will take you throught this process step-by-step.

2.1 Applying for Membership

To apply for membership in the USS Unicorn you must complete a Membership Application. Membership Applications are available in two ways: 1) By requesting a form from [email protected] make subject: Join USS Unicorn, and 2) On-Line at the USS Unicorn Web Site.

The application must be completed. This means that ALL questions must be answered in full. Applications which have questions unanswered are not certain to be processed.

2.2 Creating Your Character

You will notice that there is a section for a character information on the application. You'll be living (hopefully) with this character for a long time, so time should be taken in its creation.

To begin ask yourself the following questions:
  1. What is the race of my character?
  2. Where does my character come from?
  3. What made my character who he/she is today?
  4. What brought my character to become involved in the storyline?
  5. Do I have any quirks or odd habits? A favorite saying? An accent?

By asking yourself these five simple questions you develope the most important parts of your character: behavior, motivations, actions, goals, relationships, etc. Its these things that truely make your character who they are.

Next you'll need to build a physical description of your character. The physical description is important as it allows others to better visualize and "interact" with your character during the story. Answer the following questions to help you build you physical description:

  1. Taking into account my race, what are my overall characteristics?
  2. Am I male or female? Or does my race even define sex?
  3. Do I have any abnormalities that are not usually associated with my race?
  4. What is my general size, hair/eye/skin color?

The answers to these questions should allow not only you, but the others in the story to have a resonable idea of exactly what your character looks like.

In Background information you have to include these four things:

Using the answers to the questions presented above you should be able to easily complete the Character Information portion of the Membership Application.

For more detailed and in-depth instructions and tips on creating characters I suggest the book: "Creating Unforgettable Characters", by Linda Seger, published in 1990 by "Henry Holt and Company".

3.0 Rules, Policies, and Guidelines

As hard as I've tried not to have any rules of (etc.) for USS Unicorn Members, I've still found that a few are required. Although the rules may be few, and rarely mentioned, you are required to follow each af them as they are designed for the stabillity of the group as a whole.

Rules, Policies, and Guidelines which govern the members of the USS Unicorn are created and decided upon by a group of members. These members, all members of Starfleet Command Rules, Politics & Guidelines Ministery Subject: Starfleet Command RPGM, make up a part of the USS Unicorn Starfleet Command. It is this Command that votes new rules into existence, or puts an end to old rules no longer needed.

3.1 Characters and Game play

The following rules govern the play and development of USS Unicorn Characters:
  1. No player may maintain more than one character at the same time.
  2. Players are expected to take part in the story at least once every 10 days. This rule is designed as a minimum only, If you are able to play more than once every 10 days you are encouraged to do so.
  3. Major storyline changes and/or developments should be approved by Starfleet Command before being introduced into the storyline. Examples of a major stoyline development include: the destruction of a ship or starbase, the death of a player-character or major non-player-character, the introduction of a new race which will become a major part of the story, etc.

3.2 Inactivity

If at any time you plan to be away from the game for longer than 10 days I require that you request leave. Requests for leave should be sent to Starfleet Command Leave Ministery Subject: Starfleet Command Leave. Leave cannot be denied, however you may be required to place your character in a different type of leave by Starfleet Command. The three type of leave are explained below:

Regular Leave:
You will be away from the game for up to 14 days.
Extended Leave:
You will be away from the game for more than 14 days.
Hold Status:
You will be away from the game for an unknown lenght of time. Unlike extended and regular leave, placing your character in a hold status does not gaurantee that your slot on the USS Unicorn will be held for you. However you will have priority as to available slots when you return.

Also, when you request leave you should state if you would like to have USS unicorn Mailings discontinued for the length of the leave, or if you wish to continue to recieve all E-Mails.

3.3 Promotions

Promotions for characters are as follows: Before a promotion can be given three other characters must have given recommended the promotion. By writing why to Starfleet Command Promotion Minisetry Subject: Starfleet Command Promotion.

Field Promotion: The commanding officer of the ship may request to award a field promotion to one of their crew if they wish. This should have an RP basis, ie: the captain is injured an unable to command the ship, so he awards a field promotion to Captain to his first officer.

Declining a Promotion: A member may, at any time they are to be promoted, decline the promotion. The member must include a reason for declining. It is then their duty to inform the Starfleet Command Promotion Minisetry (Subject: Starfleet Command Decline Promotion) when they are ready to accept the promotion.
4.0 Playing

For more efficient play, you should read through all of the Crew Bios on the website to familiarize yourself with the other characters that you will be interacting with. It is also a great way to get ideas on how to write a biography.
