If in 1967 you were a teenager or adventurous at heart, every Wednesday evening you were glued to your television set at 8 O'clock sharp. On another evening, you might have a chance to accept a secret mission, secure in the knowledge that should you or your I.M.F. force be discovered, the secretary would disavow any knowledge of you. But on Wednesdays you joined Captain James T. Kirk and the rest of the crew of the Federation Starship NCC1701, the Starship Enterprise, as it journeyed to new worlds, sought new civilizations, and boldly went wherever the imaginations of a gifted staff of writers led by the vision of one man, Gene Roddenberry, would take us.
After the first episodes of Startrek it took almost 25 years for
the Internet and the World Wide Web to come into being, but before the
net there was Usenet. Rumor has it that a Startrek group was one of the
first ones started! Currently there are about 60 usenet sites keeping Trekkies
together, in half a dozen major languages including German, French, Italian,
Japanese, and Finish. Not to mention English. At these usenet sites, you'll
find everything from gossip about the newest movies, through information
about personal appearances at Con's by cast and crew of the various Startrek
series, photo's and lots more. For digitized data (artwork, photos,
.wav files, etc.), a good place to start is alt.binaries.startrek
Several other good groups to check out are alt.startrek
, rec.arts.startrek.tech
, alt.startrek.tos.trekmuse
and rec.arts.startrek.misc
. But be warned! Before posting an opinion/observation to any of these
groups, make sure you've got all of your facts
straight, these people can play rough and can make an unwary or uninformed
initiate feel very unloved! But many of them are willing to answer honest
questions, and can point you towards an amazing variety of resources.
