Sumire no Hana no You na

a page dedicated to all the Sumires of anime and manga

last updated 6/10/99

The title of this page is taken from an old song which goes:

Haru o ai suru hito wa
Kokoro kiyoki hito
Sumire no hana no you na
Boku no tomodachi
Those who love the springtime
Are pure of heart
Like the violet
They are my friends

In Japanese, sumire is the word for "violet" (the flower, not the color), and it is a not-unusual (if not terribly common) name for girls, usually written in hiragana rather than kanji. A Japanese friend of mine claimed that Sumire could also be a boy's name (this has since been proven by the presence of a boy named Sumire in You Higuri's manga, "Ramen Ikaga!?"), but I pity any boy stuck with the name Sumire. Some other Japanese friends of mine felt that the name Sumire has the connotations of a beautiful, glamorous woman.

By the way, if you're wondering which of these characters I'm named after, the answer is none of them. I was named after my grandmother. ^_^
