What I bought this week

On these pages you'll find a short review of my weekly comic book spending spree.  I'll try and avoid spoilers in this section and just stick to basic opinions of the issues.  The first week reviewed will be July 8.  I'll be trying to get these done the day I read my new comics, and will try to keep an archive of past weeks.  I know this probably won't interest many people but, I think it's a nifty idea, so there...

Disclaimer: As pointed out by one of my friends, I don't review everything I read each week, I simply review what I buy each week.  In addition to what you find here, I'm a regular follower of Flash, Robin and several other titles that my friends buy.  It is, however, harder to keep up the reviews when I don't have the hard copy in my hand.  Therefore, this will remain a page of reviews of what I bought each week, and the title now reflects that.

NOTE:  I've noticed that it's really hard for me to get the reviews done the day that the comics come out unless I'm off work that day.  As such, they will usually be posted sometime the day after.  Thanks for your patience.

Due to the problems I've had with my homepage, I'm going to include the reviews for November 3rd and 10th along with October 28th.

October 28

Green Lantern 3D - Actually, putting aside the fact that the 3D stuff is really just a hook to get you to buy the book, this issue wasn't bad at all.  It has Doctor Light taking Kyle into the battery where he himself spent years.  However, instead of the chaos that the good doctor had experienced, it was a recreation of Oa, complete with the entire compliment of GL corps.  Jade follows Kyle into the battery and the two of them fight Dr. Light.  Not a bad little issue, kind of fun, but in the end it really was a gimmick book.

Green Lantern 80 Page Giant - Speaking of gimmick books, these 80 pagers are the epitomy of the gimmick book.  This one wasn't very good, and yet I bought it and continue to buy these things.  This book had a story about Alan Scott's, John Stewart's, and Guy Gardner's glory days as Green Lanterns.  It also has a story about Hal Jordan and how great he was, as well as a story about Kyle before he became GL.  I think the best part of this book was the framing story that had Alan, John and Guy sitting around telling the stories.  The idea behind it is that they get together and swap stories for (they assume) Kyle's benifit, but they find that it's really for them, that they remember the past as well as look forward to the future.  I just wish that the stories could be told better, just being limited to ten or so pages doesn't mean that the story has to suffer too.  Oh well, I guess the G'Nort story was worth it all...

JLA #24 - The US government is more than a little paranoid about the idea of several godlike beings living on the moon and calling themselves the protectors of humanity, so they create their own team of super-marines to be the first line of defense for the US.  This story didn't have much going for it except for the hints for the future and one very good point.  Is is right for the JLA to set themselves up as defenders of humanity?  Just because they have superpowers, can they regulate what's right and wrong?  I'm looking forward to the next issue and very much looking forward to future issues.

JLA/Titans #1 - Everyone who was ever a Titan (including Flash and Green Lantern) has been kidnapped by an unknown entity and the JLA has to find out who's behind it and save their comrades.  The story was a bit choppy, but there was so much to it that I think it worked out okay.  I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series, and even more for the new Titans relaunch.

November 3

Martian Manhunter #2 - As if Martian Manhunter #1,000,000 wasn't forshadowing enough, this issue introduces a villain that will come to plauge J'onn in about 10,000 years, or at least it's little brother.  The Antares Clanetary System that was mentioned in issue 1,000,000 has sent out a probe to Earth, and Mr. Martian Manhunter tries to stop it.  I think one of the things I like best about this book so far is that we see a different human guise for the big green guy.  I've been looking forward to a Martian Manhunter series for quite some time, and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Young Justice #4 - Not nearly as fun as the last couple issues, but a lot more plot driven.  This issue introduces a new villain that seems like he's going to give YJ a lot of trouble.  It also brings in some new members, namely: Arrowette, Wonder Girl and The Secret.  I really enjoyed the issue and still continue to enjoy the series.  The only thing I didn't like was that it was a cliffhanger and the second part was the Young Justice Secret Files, a $4.95 book (and yes, I was planning on getting it anyway, but what if I wasn't, I'd be upset)

November 10

Green Lantern #108 - I was looking forward to this issue since it's got as a guest writer, the new writer for Wonder Woman.  I thought it would be nice to have a new writer that may add some depth to the storyline or something.  It sucked.  Plain and simple.  The story was choppy and didn't accomplish anything worthwhile.  I was sorely disappointed.  This issue involves Jade tracking a villain that reminds her of her deceased mother.  Along the way, she teams up with everyone's favorite Amazonian Princess, Wonder Woman, in a move that makes no real sense to the plot.  The only thing this issue accomplished is a basic retelling of what happened to Kyle when he first got the ring.  Jade doesn't really know how to use it (yeah right she doesn't know how to use it, she's had these powers for her entire life, now she just has to focus it through a piece of jewelry), and makes some stupid mistakes.  Not good at all.  In fact quite bad, and it makes me glad that I'm not going to pick up Wonder Woman under the new writers.

Legends of the DCU #12 - Part one of a two part JLA story and one of the best Legends stories so far (although the Batgirl issues were good).  It opens with the JLA growing out of control and not knowing how to stop it.  VERY good issue, that's about all the more I can say about it without ruining anything.  There are some good scenes between Millionaire Bruce Wayne and Millionaire Oliver Queen.  I really enjoyed this issue and would highly recommend it.

Young Justice Secret Files - Really good issue, and very informative.  I enjoyed the way the book was written as if it were a DEO case file.  The story that concludes Young Justice #4 was really good, but the rest of the stuff, the lost pages, the tour of the headquarters weren't all that good.  The Bios were interesting, and informative.  I enjoyed this issue, but then, everything that has to do with Young Justice (so far) has been really good, so I shouldn't be surprised.
