DECAPITATED
There is an immediacy to this album that is both riveting and just flat out eviscerating, for lack of a better cliché'. Strange thing was that when this album hit the shelves I remember being in no great rush to go out and get it. So much time passed before I was egged on to hear it that my expectations were even lower. Well, from the onset of the opening staccato-like riffage, I was pulled into the carnage and I've been reveling in it ever since.Poland's DECAPITATED, in all their youth, seem destined for greatness with a debut this strong. Essentially all the pieces are here: ability, conviction, power. Put that on tape and give it a good production, place it on disc and you've got one mean motor scooter of an album. Death Metal rarely raises an eyebrow with me these days unless its got some ingredient of memorability. Winds Of Creation is surprisingly straightforward yet so incredibly well constructed you can't help but slap your forehead and call your friends to tell them all about it. Just make sure you turn down the stereo when you do so, this album demands maximum volume.
Winds Of Creation is brutal, hurtful, and damaging, cyclonic Death Metal nirvana. Its technical moments are the only times when your' re allowed to catch your breath. That means you need to expect the utmost whirlwind of blast beats and ferocious breakdowns, salted with some fine leadwork. My only real concern are the vocals (what else is new?), which are so low and guttural as to sound too generic given how many other bands of lesser ability use them. DECAPITATED have serious playing talent and with the right vocal support, they're on their way.
If you like this genre of Metal played with the savagery you've always come to expect but with the benefit of extremely precise playing, this is a no-brainer. Now that I reflect back on it, I can only wonder why those brief sound clips I listened to when this came out didn't hook me. I've got a huge hook in my gills now...
