DIVINITY
This Canadian foursome aren't exactly newcomers. They've been making the rounds here and there since the late 1990's. I can't comment on how well-known they might be in their native country but they are virtual unknowns here in the USA. However, this self-released EP is enough for me, as one who grew up with Old School Thrash of the Bay Area kind, to get interested. I didn't immediately get blown over by DIVINITY's Thrashy approach but a couple of listens later I began to detect the hooks sinking in. Those who remember the glory days of Bay Area Metal like DEFIANCE, who I would say DIVINITY most closely resemble in sound construct, should find this release worth their time and effort to obtain. Fans of newer, more varied and multi-dimensional Metal might find this dry however. DIVINITY are a purely straightforward, Aggro-Thrash band, not overly sensitive to the sort of nuance's you might be accustomed to these days. That's why I would recommend this more to the audience of my generation who spent the latter part of the 1980's diving off stages and making the rounds in one mosh pit after the next.I like DIVINITY's stylistic simplicity. Songs like "World Of Pain", "Define Reality" and "Intuition" have some nifty riffs and the energy level is at all times peaking out at the boiling point. Vocally, its all Bay Area Old School, which has its plus and minuses depending on your viewpoint of that era and genre. I think with better recording equipment that can thicken this band's sound and give them more sound engineering options to toy with, it'll be record label contract time.
