HEXECUTION
You'd be rightly excused for shrugging off a review of a release called Beyond All Evil by a band called HEXECUTION who hails from England, not a noted hotbed for good Death or Thrash Metal bands. But wait, this is different...kind of.Yes indeed, the moniker and the even the song titles are very 80's and rather predictable but HEXECUTION were a decent outfit with some good ideas. They certainly did have that Englsh feel, mostly in the average vocal performance but surprisingly there is an interesting OPETHish feel in many of the riff constructs. The disc, a meager 3 song EP, is mostly Thrashy Metal with some somber and melodic meanderings. The tragedy of listening to this is that you are left wondering what might have been because as the last song thunders off into the void, one gets the distinct impression that HEXECUTION were better than most British extreme Metal outfits. Musicianship is good and there is definite attention to detail in the songwriting process. Decently produced, Beyond All Evil is, if nothing else, a collectible of interest due to its out of print nature (though several copies continue to emerge at various outlets from time to time). I can't elaborate in great depth on the disc with only 3 tracks present but what I can say is that this is a band that showed promise in developing catchy rhythms and articulated riffs. The tracks do in fact have an old school flavor to them, even when it was released in 1998. Not a bad knick-knack.
