Luther Allison
"Reckless"
Alligator 4849, 1997
This is Luther Allison's third Alligator release since his 1994 Soul Fixin' Man which was his first U.S. recording in over 20 years. The material on this album carries on in a similar vein to his award winning 1995 Blue Streak CD - more hard driving blues guitar mixed with that classic west-side soul. There is even a nice acoustic duet with son Bernard Allison on "Playin' A Losing Game." One of my favorite songs on the album is "Just As I Am." This is a slower paced number with some passionate, soulful vocals by Allison and nice organ by Mike Vlahakis. There is also a well done cover of O.V. Wright's classic "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," which starts off with a moody organ solo then Luther's voice joins in with some plaintive lyrics - just a great song. The song "You Can, You Can" has that infectious foot tapping rhythm that is sure to get people up and dancing (as was evidenced when he performed it at his recent show in Minneapolis - see Luther Allison review in Blues On Stage). This is one of those albums that continues to grow on you with each new listen. I find myself looking forward to what I am going to hear the next time I listen to the album.
