Lou Pride
"Twisting The Knife" CD Review
Ichiban, ICH1510-2, 13 tracks, 51 minutes
This is a very strong southern soul recording by soul veteran Lou Pride. His vocals are smooth and solid uptown soul that glide easily over the material. They have a smooth Bobby Bland quality to them. Most of the songs on the album have a storytelling characteristic about them with one of the best being the title cut "Twisting The Knife." That song was written by bass player Bob Greenlee and drummer Ronnie Foster. They also co-wrote "Lifetime Thing" that has a solid beat and precise vocals by Pride that go right to the heart of the song. The very good horn arrangements also add substance to the material and provide excellent accompaniment to Pride's vocal stylings. This album has solid support from the musicians and does not have the homogenized quality of the synthesized backing found on some of the current soul albums. Most of the material is original and there is even an old Buddy Ace song, "Love Of Mine" that is in the same smooth vein as the rest of the material on the album.
Order CD from Ichiban Records.
