Why do we think here that
REALAUDIO SUXX?
you may ask...
Well, we've got nothing against audio compression of course, and
realaudio is good in the sense that it makes more online audio files avialiable,
we've got nothing against the technology, since technology is never the
fault.
so here are reasons why not to use the realaudio format:
(we don't mean by ANY means to convince any1 not to lis10 2 realaudio
clips, just if u'r putting online u'r own files, think twice b4 choosing
realaudio)
-
realaudio use misleading titles which r really annoying
1) the terms of ~radio stations~ instade of files, your downloading actual
files, not some ~radio~ transmision
2) disinformative parameters, like saying this is a ~28.8k quality
file~ instade of saying str8 out the file info like "11khz 16bit, compressed"
which is my guess (i don't really know cuz they're not very informative
in the nfo filez).
Leaving out info and using more ~friendly~ titles is the main game
here, assuming it'll help attract more users cuz most users are afraid
of technikal info. infact all this causes is confusion. tipical for this
kind of cooparative, same technik that microsoft uses.
3) that stupid "record" button that the player has that actually just
means to COPY the current clip from memory to somewhere in your diskspace.

monopoly. as phar as i know realaudio don't provide delelopers' info about
their format/player. in contrast to Mpeg for instance who provide free
LOADs of info in their web site, Mpeg is far more friendlier, they're TONS
of public domain source codes which r MPEG related. As a result, i havn't
seen any player for realaudio files but THE realaudio player THEY provide.
that means that people r totally dependent of them. and this is BADDD....

Why not use MP3 files instade? in our testings compressing to MP3 gives
a phar supirier quality and the resolting file size is only about 5% bigger
(comparring 28.8k RA file to a MP3 11khz 16bit)
-
the wierd .ram files which only kontain URLz for the ~real~ .ra files,
makes downloading more annoying, since manny poeple still unfortainly don't
have a good connection to the net nowdays lis10ing OFFLINE is usually a
better option for them (as opposed to lis10ing to 12 secs, w8ing for some
more data to d/l lis10 to another bumpy 10 sec and getting a message that
the URL is temporaraly n/a, well, i don't have to tell U that if u'r used
to lis10ing to audio clips at commertial sites like ~muzak~ and others)
-
this annoying
icon, which tends to appear.... case u donno this icons means that u CAN'T
~record~ the current clip, or in plain english it means that u CAN'T SAVE
THE SOUND MEMORY BUFFER INTO A FILE ON YOUR OWN HARDDISK, well that IT!!!!!
i think they have some NERVE to make this option, what does it mean u CAN'T???
it's in YOUR system's memory at some address, what's the deal here? i havn't
try'd debuging this out, but if some1 there is going to release their own
RA player, please ignore this stupid "feature".......
well that's about it for now, convinced?please give us feedback about this,
if u have more things agains RA we'll add them to the list...
