"Zarina!"
Zarina Emran heard someone holler her name and jumped, surprised. She turned and saw Zac Hanson running towards her, sneakers thudding on the pavement of West Avenue, where she, Zac and a few of their friends lived.
"Yeah?" She asked when he finally got to her.
"Hold on a sec, lemme catch my breath," Zac said.
Finally, he looked at her and dropped to one knee. Taking her hand, he said, "Oh, sweet Zarina, will thou escort me to the Valentine's Day Dance at the Community Center?"
Giggling, Zarina snatched her hand away. "I thought you were always freaked out at going to local places."
"Why should I?"
"You said you hated the mob," Zarina pointed out. "Besides, I may not be going."
"You won't?" Zac exclaimed. "Why?"
"Yazmin's Graduation Night. Can't miss it. It's been three years since I had seen her when she moved away to Boston."
"Oh, man," Zac groaned.
"But don't worry, I'll make it up to you," Zarina promised, crossing her heart and snapping her fingers twice.
