Sporty unit's power outstrips the norm for this displacement.
The rally cars that led SUBARU to three consecutive WRC are based on the IMPREZA GT. The powerful heart of this vehicle is an intercooler-equipped, turbocharged 2.0-liter DOHC Horizontally-Opposed Engine. Its overwhelmingtorque and explosive acceleration make the WRC pedigree readily apparent. Through an improved head section design, the new unit achieves still greater power. Its pleasing exhaust sound, characteristic of Horizontally-Opposed Engines, gives a hint of tremendous power potential. This engine is like a dream come true for anyone who seeks driving with a sporty feel.

Furthermore, the engine characteristics are the quintessence of naturalness. Combined with SUBARU's AWD technology, any driver can safely delight in the high performance of this engine.

Easy-to-use sporty natural aspiration engine.
The natuaral aspiration (NA) model is available with either a 2.0-liter or a 1.6-liter 16-valve Horizontally-Opposed Engine. Both of these units feature the sportiness for which the IMPREZA is famous. The design of the cylinder head section has been further improved for greater power as well as lower vibration and enhanced quietness. The engine rotation speed region below 3,000 rpm - which is the most frequently used - was emphasized in the design, so particularly in that region, excellent performance has been obtained with a fine acceleration feel and response as well as fuel economy.

Furthermore, besides characteristic compactness and high rigidty, the new Horizontally-Opposed Engine achieves an even higher level of efficiency and more outstanding drive feel than previously. The left-right weight balance of the engine itself is symmetrical for perfect matching with SUBARU's legendary AWD system.

Original, Innovative drive train.

The IMPREZA can be had with two types of SUBARU AWD systems and one type of FWD drive train.

Both AWD systems are of the full-time AWD for which SUBARU is famous as the industry leader. One of the greatest advantages of SUBARU AWD is the engine, transmission, transfer and rear differential are all arranged in a straight line - the ideal layout for assuring front-rear and left-right weight balance, for driving characteristics faithful to the driver's will regardless of driving conditions. The net result is a high level of active safety.

E-4AT (Electronically-controlled 4-speed automatic transmission) models use Active Torque Sprit AWD. The electronically controlled multiplate transfer (MPT) automatically varies torque distribution between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions.

5MT (5-speed manual transmission) models are paired with viscous LSD-equipped center differential AWD. The Sports Wagon NA/AWD model has dual range (Hi/Lo) specifications; any time particularly bad road conditions are encountered, the user can instantly switch into "Lo" mode for an added level of road-handling capability.

Transmission for sport driving.
On both AT and MT models, the new transmissions have been shortened, resulting in a still better weight balance. Besides liberating the driver through its wonderful shifting, the 7-position E-4AT is able to deliver truly fun, sporty driving. The shift program is faithful to the driver's will, and always achieves a consistent, linear driving feel. 5MT has better handling characteristics than ever. Besides outstanding weight balance, it lets you savor truly fun driving.
