Fat Jack: Cater to the D.J (4LP)Audio
Finally I recieve my Cater to the D.J record after about a month of waiting, and let me say it was worth the wait. This album contains a whopping 39 tracks of dopeness from the MC's of the Good Life, and Project Blowed. The album starts out with Fat Jack gettin' some shit off his chest, then comes in with a dope track by the A-Team(Aceyalone & Abstract Rude) with some fresh beat boxing sampled into the chorus. The next song "Gimme five feet" by Aceyalone is probably my favorite track because of the tight beat and because Acey comes correct on this one tellin suckas to give some space, back up fools! Now I think most people knew that Acey, Ab Rude, P.E.A.C.E, and other more recognized Blowdians would come correct, but what about the new comers you say? One song I was instantly hooked on was Puzoozoo Watt's "Everyday MC Work", bringing a fresh ass singing/rhyming style, another track thats dope, both lyrically and musically is "Scud Missile", by Ganjah KMC, straight tearin' shit up. In conclusion this album is all around solid, the beats are tight, the MC's come correct, and theres enough tracks to keep this on your playlist for a while. Pick it up today. - Tonic.
MF Doom: Operation Doomsday (2LP)
Audio
Undoubtably the raw-est record I've heard this year (1999. for you suckas that slept.) MF DOOM drops the long awaited LP, OPERATION DOOMSDAY. This ain't no formulatic type of ish. It's more like the ThiCK CUt of Hip Hop. DOOm drop's 14 tracks of originality. If you don't know check out "Rhymes like dimes" & "Doomsday" These two tracks will get you open to DOOM's flow and soul infected production. Other stand out track's include "?" which feature's Kurious droppin the usual flavour, "Tick,Tick" featuring MF GRIMM keeps you guessing. DOOM's production on this track takes the beat faster than slows it down, through out the track, while Grimm spit's his verses on point. "Who you think I am" is some more raw ass ish from the Monster Island Massive. This track demonstrates just how ill this crew of MC's is. Although eight of the fourteen tracks have already been released over the last couple of years. This LP is definitely a must have for your blue box. The skits keep it rough with samples from Wild Style, Fantastic Four and Godzilla, with a few other surprise's. Bobitto even drops some shit that will have you on your ass. I think this is gonna be one of the most underappreciated records of the year. Like KMD in 90/91, pick this up cuz I know you wish you had Mr. HOOD. STRAIGHT UP RAW HIP HOP!! - Cliff Daddy
Blackalicious: NIA (2LP)
Audio
I think a lot of people slept on the first Blackalicious album(Melodica). Maybe because you never heard of them before, or the wack DJ at the record store told you to grab that new Lords of the Underground record instead, whatever it was you probably realized that you should of picked up the Blackalicious, and now is your chance to redeem yourself with the release of the new album "NIA". Now before I go on, I should state that three of the tracks from the E.P are on this album, but thats not bad considering theres 22 songs in total. "NIA" starts off the way I expected it....DOPE, the first track called the "Fabulous Ones" is a short but sweet track, with the usual dope lyrics. The second track is on a much more mellow vibe with a bit of singing laced throughout which is very fresh, this brings me to the third song which is one of my favorite tracks, "Deception" (if you haven't already heard it) is about a kid who makes it big in the music industry but falls victim to the all mighty dollar, this beat has one the freshest samples. Jumping ahead a bit, the first track on the B-side "Shallow Days" is a really dope song with these brothers getting some shit off their chest over a jazzy beat. Another really dope song is "Smithzonian Institute Of Rhyme", with some raw ass lyrics and a super dope beat. I could go on about more tracks on this record but I'll let ya'll discover the rest for your selves. In conclusion I think this record is a must buy beacause of the diversity, the beats are fresh, the rhymes are tight, and...well if you don't own "Melodica" you owe yourself this one. - Tonic
