Tarzan and the Phantom of the Opera
many years ago I read on the POTO mailing list about two Tarzan comicbooks that covered a Phantom theme. The problem was that the weren't avaiable in the Netherlands. Fortunately Carrrie Hernandez (owner from the Nexus Homepage, POTO magazine and Rhapsody) was so very kind to send them from America.

The comics are very thin and the story is spread over two parts (number 11 and 12) which cost in America 2.95 dollar each. The style of the drawings is I think the same as those other "super-hero" comicbooks. Its drawn by Kindzierski, Manoukian and Roucher, the publisher is Dark Horse Comics.

In the story Tarzan is back in the civelised word as Lord Graystoke. He is traveling around Europe to find Jane who., for one reason went away to think about their relationship. Tarzan has saved Paul from kannibals and brought him back to Paris. Paul tells Tarzan that he is in love with the beautifull soprano Christine and invites Tarzan to the Opera House. Before the performance Paul barges into Christine's dressing room, and asks her to marry him and leave the opera. The Phantom braks through the secret trapdoor attacks him, eventually knocking him out and he kidnaps Christine. Tarzan, who had been locked out breaks down the door constantly screeming monkeylanguage. He goes after the Phantom, first he can not find him but when he has torn his shirt and has sniffed on Christine's perfume he hunts them down like a bloudhound. After a few fights between the Phantom and Tarzan. In which they trie to kill each other and the Phantom runs away, Tarzan catches up with them in the Phantom's lair. The Phantom has calmed down by now: he admits he lost it because he didn't want Christine to stop singing. Christine is very angry with him, she does not mind his face, but: this is *her* life and she'll live it as *she* chooses...and he can't force herinto singing. Also has calmed had ties to find a sollution he suggests the Phantom live a 'normal' life and teach Christine. The Phantom explains he couldn't fit in even if he had a normal face - he's says he neverbelonged there becuase of the way he is.... in his hart. Christine and the Phantom agree that he wil stay down below and gives her singing lessons. Christine and Tarzan go back upstair. When everything is explained and arranged and everyone goes back to work. In the last picture Tarzan stands in front of a scenery with a jungle on it en thinks exactly what the the Phantom had said: "I have never really belonged there, because of the way I am.... in my heart"

Rouletabille en de schat van het Spook van de Opera (Rouletabille and the treasure of the Phantom of the Opera)
Like the other Rouletbille comic it is available in Dutch, drawn and written by the same authors and published by Lefranq. The ISBN number is: 90-75388-53-5. The story is very confusing because a lot of things are happening. Also its not quite clear who the villan is. Christine sings in the Scala Operahouse in Milan. A admirer, a Italian nobleman invites her and Rouletabille to his villa in Venice. It turns out that Erik has build a underground palace and a temple to worship the devil under the house of the count. Erik warnes Christine and Rouletabille that the count is a devil worshipper and in return the count accuses him. Then a acquaintance, the Marchioness and Christine are kidnapped. When Rouletabille tries to follow them he sees a masked man dragging Christine, and thinks its Erik who is to blame. When he gets a note and follows the directions he meets Erik in front of a altar made for Devil worshipping. Erik denies everything, but offers to help finding Christine and the Marchioness since he knows the house well. Unfortunately Rouletabille has to watch how Erik is captured. The count still thinks Rouletabille believes his story so he is not suspicious. Rouletabille goes down and frees Erik who has been tortured because they wanted to know were his secret treasure was hidden. When Rouletabille returns to his room he is captured by the count and has to whitness the "Black mass" in wich Christine and her friend will be sacrefised. Erik turns up just in time, armed with a gun. But when the count threatens to kill the Marchiness, he has to surrender. Still the count kills the poor woman. He takes Christine away and his accomplices bring Rouletabille to the guillotine. Erik, who has build all this, tells Rouletabille to watch out for the last step. Rouletabille who remembers that, in a wall painting a step had been a entrance to a secret passage, finds a gun in the highest step to the guillotine and kills the accomplices. They catch the count, who has returned and he confesses where he has brought Christine. When everything is over and Rouletabille and Christine are cruising around Venice in a Gondola they ask themselfes if they will ever see Erik, who mysteriosly dissappaerd, again. The gondolier sings with a beautifull voice "O sole Mio" He looks up a little and in the shadows you recognise...........Erik.

Rouletabille en het Spook van de Opera (Roulettabille and the Phantom of the Opera)
This one is in the Dutch language and based on Gaston Leroux's original story. It is a part of a line of detective comics drawn and written by A.P. Duchateau and B.C. Swysen. The comic is published by Lefrancq and the number is ISBN 90-71987-14-0. The style of the drawings is not really realistic, but with an eye for details.

Although the story is based on Gaston Leroux's novel ,the main caracter is Rouletabille , a reporter and writer of opera reviews. He replaces Raoul in the story. He falls in love with Christine and gets in trouble with the Phantom of the Opera.
