General things

Q: What is a mailinglist ?
A: A mailinglist is an Email-based form of communication between
several users. It has one special E Mail-address, and every message
which is send to this address will be received by every "subscriber"
of the mailinglist.
The receiving member can either reply directly to the list ( so every
member gets his reply), or to the original sender.

Q: Why is there a Steve Morse-Mailinglist ?
A: Well, of course Steve offers a lot of communication with the
discussion boards on his official website ( http://www.stevemorse.com ),
but a mailinglist is much more "personal", you don't have to open a
browser to read messages, and every member gets messages faster
and directly "to his front door".
This listis supposed to be for discussing allSteve Morse-related topics,
likehis work withthe Steve Morse Band, the Dixie Dregs,Deep Purple,
Kansas,and about playing theguitar, flyingplanes....

Q: Who made this mailinglist, who's managing it ?
A: The list was established on April 23th 1999 by Eric, ahuge Steve Morse-
Fan. He sent invitations to several people he saw posting on the Morse-
messageboards, and soon the list had several members. Steve Morse himself
subscribed 2 days later and provides lots of answers and insider-
information to the list.
Eric himself wass moderating / managing, together with David Bova from
Australia. Nowadays, thehosting moderatorsarethat same Dave andRose.
Contactthemif youexperience technical problems regarding thelist orneed
moreinfo.

Q: What is this website for ?
A: Good question =)
Well, this is our meeting-point. Here you can read filled out member-
surveys ( which are sent to the list from time to time to be filled out by
new members. No one HAS to fill it out though ), read news and
informations collected by our members, see announcements about the list.
Later we want to add a guitar-school, member pictures and concert-
reviews, and lots more stuff...stay tuned

Becoming and being a member

Q: So, how can I learn about this list, how it works and etc.
A: Well, first of all, by reading this FAQ entirely. Here you will learn about
(un)subcribing, posting, our rules, managing your membership etc.
The Mailinglist-interface is located at
http://www.egroups.com/list/stevemorse.html
There you can read old messages, subscribe or unsubscribe, manage your
membership, post and more things.
The easier way to do all this is doing all this via E-Mail...I'll explain that
next !

Q: So, how can I become a member ?
A: Easily, just write a blank E Mail to [email protected]
and shortly after that, you will receive a welcome - message which tells you
about the list and how to use it. If you get an invitation to join instead, simply
follow the instructions in this invitation.
You can also write an Email to Dave or Rose with a short notice about your
wish to subscribe.

Q: If I subscribe, how many messages will I get every day ?
A: That differs. Sometimesit's only around 5, sometimes morethan 40 or 50
messages,or even upto 80. The record was100 postings a day.
If you got problems with your mailbox because of that, simply tell Dave, and
he can switch your membership to DIGEST-Mode.
If you're subscribed to that, you don't get all the individual messages. Instead,
you get one huge E Mail every day, containing the complete messages of that
day ( sometimes in a Text-File, attached to the digest-mail )
You can also switch to web-mode ( i.e. if you go on vacation and can't access
your E Mail-Box, but the web ). In webmode, you can read and post messages
through the mailinglist-interface.
Changes of membership-subscription are usually made by Dave. Just send him
an Email with yourrequest, and he'll be glad to help you out !

Q: How do I post a message to the list ?
A: If you're a subscribed member, just send your message to the list-address:
[email protected]
Make sure that you fill out your subject line.
If you're not a member, you can also try to post to the list. But your message
will be send to the moderators for approval first. If they accept it, it will auto-
matically be send to the whole list.

Q: If I don't like the list, how do I unsubscribe ?
A: Either send a request to Rose or Dave, or write a blank E Mail to
[email protected]

Rules

Of coursethere arerules. These were made to make sure thatthis list is
enjoyable for everyone, andto keep the listcleanand focused. Here
they are:

1. Noflaming and insulting !!!! Everyonehasthe right to say his opinion,
but IMHO it should bepossible tohave discussions without insulting each
other. Please noobscene language( atleastina tastefulamount),and
ifyou HAVE to start a "flame-war",please use private E-Mailfor this.

2. The discussionsshould stay mainlyrelated toour main-topics:SteveMorse,
his work with all thebands he has playingin, hisarticles, his playing, even
flying planes. Ithink this is a quitehuge areatostart discussions.
Itis ok ifthediscussion goesalittle "off topic" ( i.e. while talking about
influences of Steveor related artists ), but cooking recipesor personaltalk
withafriend onthelist should be taken to private E-Mail.

3. Nofiles attached please !!! Attached filescan be meant nice, but theycan
mean a seriousproblems for several members withtheir mail- boxes. These
mailboxes sometimes have a rather smallamount ofplacefor
mails with attached files, so theboxes may fill up dueto attached fileson list-postings.
Ifyou have got a file thatmay be interesting forthe members of the list, askwhowants it
and senditto the persons thatreply, in a personal E-Mail. Youcanalso send it to Eric,
who may putitup to the web, where itcan be downloaded byeveryone whowants it.
ATTENTION: Ifyou're on a provider whoautomaticallyattaches filesto your
mails (i.e. commercials),please tryto switchthatoff, ormake up an EMail-accountat
companies like Hotmail,which isfree.

4. INCYBERSPACE, TYPING WITHYOURCAPS/LOCK ON, LIKE THIS,ISTHE
EQUIVALENTONSHOUTING AT THE TOP OFYOUR LUNGS. IT'S NOT
PLEASANT TO READ, EITHER.
PLEASE DON'T POST TO THELISTWITHYOURCAPS/LOCKONFORTHE
ENTIRE POST.

5. If you have got technicalproblemswiththe list, or youwant tochangeyour membership,
pleasewrite an EMail to Rose or Dave, don'tpost this tothe list.

6. If you're a newbie, be patient ! We love to get new members, it keeps the
list alive and kicking. But please try to be patient if there's an ongoing
discussion, or some insider jokes.
Either ignore it or try to get an idea at our message-archive
( http://www.egroups.com/list/stevemorse.html).
Several people on this list (i.e. Rose, Mike Kissel, Dave, Carl and many more ) have been
on the list since it's beginning, they already know each other quite good, and if they refer
to an older discussion, an inside joke or "get personal", please accept it. Things like that
are important for a list too, and give the whole thing a little more "human warmth" =)

7.If you replytoanotherpersonsposting, please copy the question or
comment you are referring to
. Otherwise now one knows what youare
talking about.Letmegive you an example:
"Hello, Yes, this CD is great, could anyonetell me howto getit ?"
-Doyouknow whichCD this personistalking about ?-Meneither. Soplease:Copythe
sentence/questionor comment you are referring to. Only the same subject-
lineis usually notinformative enough, since every member whowants to
know what your posting is abouthasto checkthe other postings first.

8Short messages thatonly contain comments like "Iagree"or "me,too" slow downthe
list, and are annoying and boring.
Please,copythe commentyou
are referring too, and maybeexplain WHY you agree, disagree. Otherwise don'tpost.

9. If you're subscribed to the digest-mode, pleasedon't copythe whole
digestif you are replying to one comment inthe digest.
This is extremely
annoying. Also, makesure that your subjectlineinforms readers what you
are talking about. Some E-Mailprogramsmay automatically put the title of the
digest( i.e. "SMB-Digest #22) in thesubject-line, which is rather confusing.
Pleasetrytoavoidthis.

Ithink those fewrules arequite acceptable. Please alwaysremember:Thislist should
be fun and a source ofinformation,a forum forevery member. Pleasedon'ttry to limit
this by breaking one ormore of theserules. This list is monitored, and wereact toevery
violation ofthe rules.
