The city was Detroit, Michigan, a city known for the cars it produced.
A Ford assembly plant worker, Barry Gordy, Jr., was a plant worker who
enjoyed writing music on the side. Hi friends convinced him that he should
start a record company. From this beginning came the record company known
as MOTOWN (which stood for "motor town"). It would become the first and
largest recording company owned and operated by African-Americans.
The style of music produced at Motown was a combination of gospel and rhythm
and blues. These two styles combined with smooth vocal and innovative
arrangements to make Motown "The Voice of Young America."
Performers include:
The Temptations
The Supremes
