The city was Detroit, Michigan, a city known for the cars it produced. A Ford assembly plant worker, Barry Gordy, Jr., was a plant worker who enjoyed writing music on the side. Hi friends convinced him that he should start a record company. From this beginning came the record company known as MOTOWN (which stood for "motor town"). It would become the first and largest recording company owned and operated by African-Americans.
The style of music produced at Motown was a combination of gospel and rhythm and blues. These two styles combined with smooth vocal and innovative
