Everclear's Alexikis Speaks Out
Outreach to Young Fans

Everclear lead singer-guitarist Art Alexakis, who nearly died from a drug-induced heart attack at 22, urges young people who suffer from depression or drug addiction to get help. "True strength is being able to work through your problems," Alexakis, now 34, married, and the father of a 3-year-old, told React magazine. He said his troubles began when his parents divorced. "They split when I was 5. I think a lot of kids are depressed over their families breaking up. People think kids adjust easily. No. I think they just don't complain about it." When Alexakis was 11, his older brother died of a drug overdose, and a year later a girlfriend died the same way. At 13, he attempted suicide. "I just felt like no one loved me, and the people who did care about me were gone. I think part of it was I was trying to get back at people. It was like, 'They'll miss me.' It was very childish." The heart attack turned his life around; doctors detected a chemical imbalance, and Alexakis now says he is drug-free. Everclear's first major label album, "Sparkle and Fade," was a hit on the modern rock charts and explores themes such as crisis, anger and angst.
