Ty is the national spokesperson for FFA.
Ty was also on the FFA CD titled "Country Visions (Volume One)". It includes two of Ty's old songs and one new one called "Once You Learn".

Ty was born on December 5, 1963 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tys dream to become
a country music singer started when he was five years old at 1713 West Minster Road in
Oklahoma City on the day his grandfather, Ed Lester, introduced Ty to music. Ty would sit on
his front porch with his grandfather and they would play old country songs on a guitar. They had favorites back then, including Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzel, and Roy Acuff. Later Ty
liked newer country artists like Don Williams, John Conlee, and Keith Whitley. When Ty turned sixteen his grandfather gave him the guitar they used to play saying, Here, take it. To this day Ed Lester is Tys biggest influence.
In junior high and high school Ty began playing in bands. His chorus teacher, Winifred
Rose , gave him reinforcement in his vocal abilities. Ty still credits Rose for giving him
encouragement.
Playing in bands did not mean Ty could hang out in honky tonks with his friends. His
parents kept a close eye on him. My dad has very traditional values, Ty said, Family is very
important to him. And my mom is the kind who waited up for her boys just to see if wed been
behaving. (Ty has a younger brother, Greg England.)
While Ty was in college at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, he played acoustic
sets at Aunt Mollys, a coffee shop in the basement of the universitys student union. One night
a student, Ted Larkin, introduced Ty to another student attending Oklahoma State who also
loved music, Garth Brooks. Ty and Garth became fast friends. The two later became
roommates. Until then, Tys dreams didnt seem possible. Garth showed him that they could
become reality. Before Garth graduated, they made a pact that if one of them
ever got into the music business , the other one would help him along.
Unfortunately, Garth got Ty so worked up about music that his grades started slipping and Tys
father brought him home to a job and night school. Ty finished his degree and worked as an
automotive plant representative. He was on the road selling paint when Garth called him from
Nashville.
It was just three months after I graduated from college, Ty explained, I had a real good job
marketing automotive paint, and Garth called me. He said, Ive just signed my record deal and I
need to know if youre coming here to be in my band. I said, Man let me think about it. The
next day I called him and said, I thought about it. Im coming. I gave two weeks notice and
left. Ty remained in Garths band, Stillwater, for about six years, all the time knowing he
would eventually leave and start a solo career of his own. At the end of 1994 Garth took a year
off and suggested to Ty that it would be the perfect time to start his own career.
