Background Information:
Sandra Bullock is probably the most talked about actress of the last year. The "bus movie," Speed, made her famous, and in 1995 she had the hit While You Were Sleeping on her hands, while also taking the lead part in The Net. Not only does she have a captivating screen presence, but also appears to be very down-to-earth in interviews and talk shows, which makes her a very likable person.
Sandra was born on July 26, 1964 (this seems the most probable date to me, although you will find a different year of birth on every other web page) in Washington DC as the daughter of American voice coach John Bullock and German opera singer Helga Meyer. She spent her childhood mostly in the United States (Arlington, Virginia), Germany (Nuremburg), and Austria, where her mother had engagements. Since age 12 or 13 she has lived in the United States. Sandra, an above average student, attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA, where she joined the cheerleading squad. After being voted "Most Likely to Brighten Your Day" by her senior class, she graduated from WLHS in 1982.
After that, Sandra pursued a higher education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, where she enrolled as a drama major. Here she performed in Chekhov's Three Sisters, studying under the instruction of Don Biehn, who has fond memories of Sandra's performance and abilities.
Following her endeavors at ECU (three credits short of graduating), Sandra moved to New York to study method acting, instructed by Sanford Meisner. She dishonestly attained a bartending job, and later fled to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Four years after leaving ECU without a degree, Sandra landed the starring role in the NBC sitcom Working Girl, which she later considered her "quickest flop". She also starred in Love Potion No. 9 as a psychobiologist. Although the movie didn't bring her any quick fame, it did bring her a three year relationship with Tate Donavan, her costar in the film. The ending of the relationship left Sandra emotionally damaged, but she has recovered well, claiming the two are "really strong soul mates." (Premiere, July 1996) She has been solo since but has been seen with quarterback Troy Aikman and was accompanied at the opening of The Net by Don Padilla, who worked on the movie. In interviews, she stressed that she is not dating any of these men.
Sandra played the supporting role of a kidnapped victim in The Vanishing, a waitress in Wrestling Ernest Hemingway, a "wannabe country singer" in The Thing Called Love (for which she wrote and performed her own song entitled "Heaven Knocking on My Door"), and a futuristic street cop in Demolition Man, replacing Lori Petty. It is that role which seemingly clinched her part as Annie, an "average ' girl'", in the 1994 box office smash Speed. In 1995, director Jon Turteltaub gave Sandra her first starring role as Lucy in While You Were Sleeping, this time replacing Demi Moore, for whom the part was originally intended. That same year, Sandra rocked the box office again as Angela Bennett in The Net.
Nineteen ninety-six brought $6 million to Sandra's door because she starred as Ellen Roark in John Grisham's A Time to Kill. Sandra's '96 schedule also included Two If By Sea and In Love and War. She will star in Kate and Leopald, which will also be her first production.
Bullock served as Executive Producer on Hope Floats and is producing Gun Shy (1999), in which she also acts along with Liam Neeson. You can catch her as the voice of Miriam in the animated film The Prince of Egypt.
Sandra's career is certainly booming. Since she was in sixth grade, she's had her mind set on acting. This is perhaps the secret to her success. She hasn't come this far in perfection, however, stating more than once lessons she has learned along the way. It is her "I want to do it; I'm going to do it" attitude that's brought her so much success and fame. As nearly anyone who knows her will tell you, she doesn't have the "I'm famous" bug. When asked in an interview with 48 Hours, "Is it correct to call you a superstar?" Sandra responded, "No it's not." She refers to herself as an "actor who happens to be fortunately working a lot." She simply loves what she's doing.
This popular actress recieved a "People's Choice" award in 1997, an addition to the Golden Globe nomination she received for While You Were Sleeping (1995), and the numerous MTV Movie Awards she's received.
According to herself (on The Late Show, July 27, 1995 and August 3, 1995), she is 5' 7 1/2" and her shoe size is 8 1/2. She has a 25-year-old sister named Gesine, who studies law, working with criminals and gang members.
As could be read and heard in various interviews, she is very keen at trying out everything, due to which she obviously found fun in doing some handy work in her own house. The house in Los Angeles, where she is living with her sister, was renovated by herself and the rest of the family.
Her favorite singer is Tom Jones, from whom she would like to have an autograph, but maybe she has it already...
Currently, it is hip for people in the movie business to talk about the Internet or even admit using it. Sandra Bullock, though, has been using computers for several years now and even had an account on America Online that still exists, but it has been reported that she parted with the service some time ago when she found that her alter ego, "screen name," (as it was called on AOL) was discovered by someone, who then followed her around on the internet. She uses her computer (a Macintosh Power Book) mostly to communicate with her friends who are scattered around the world and says that sitting at a computer and answer E-mail is a good thing to do when finally getting home from a movie set late at night, while still having a caffeine rush from many Cappuccinos.
Joel Schumacher, director of A Time To Kill, sums it up well. "I've known Sandra for years. She's one of my favorite people on the planet. To know her is to love her."
