Part 2. - "I Guess It Would Be Nice"
The phone
rings at a small apartment close to a train station, and a
brown-haired woman answer it.
- Hello? Oh, hi George!
She is excited. Why does he call her? What
does he want? Her expectations are high, even though she knows
she will get disappointed - again. They have been neighbours for
almost 3 years, and all that time she has been hopelessly in love
with him.
- Sure, George. Come on over.
He wants her advice about his new girl. Her enemy, the model, the
beautiful model. She wants to cry, but knows it is not such a
good idea. Mostly because the guy in question is on his way over,
and she will spend some time with him. Even thought it is not for
her own benefit. "We're friends, we're friends!"
she mumbles to herself.
A knock on the door. She opens and there he
is. He looks even better than before. He has this new appearance,
a kind of glow over him. "Because he's in love..."
she decides. She gets even sadder as she thinks about what it
could have been if it had been HER he loved with all his heart.
He wakes her up from her deep thoughts with a laugh.
- What are you thinking about, Sarah?
he laughs. - I've asked you a question 4 times now,
and I'm still waiting for an answer.
- I'm sorry, she says and blushes. -
What did you ask again?
He tells her about the event outside his girl's studio, and she
politely waits for him to finish.
- What was her name again? she asks
just to make it sound like she listens properly instead of what
she really does. She can't take her eyes off his open shirt, and
that beautiful smile of his.
- Tania, he sighs. - Tania
Coleridge.
She can see that only her name brings him to the 7th heaven. He
takes a deep breath and starts with what he really came for.
- This is a little embarrassing, he
starts. - You see, it's been 3 years since I was, you
know, with a woman.
She can't believe her ears. That long? All
the time she has been fantasising about him, he hasn't had other
women. " Darn it, I should have tried when I could",
she thinks to herself.
- Why are you telling me this? she
wants to know.
- I was scared shitless when she invited me up to her
apartment the first evening. I feel like a virgin,
he laughs.
- What do you want me to do? Give you directions via
a plug in your ear? And I have to sit on the roof of the building
across the street with a binocular just to know when to say the
right things? What?
He starts to laugh and can't seem to stop.
She sits there and watches him as he lays back on her bed and
laughs as if he has never laughed before. He rolls around and
can't stop even though he wants to. She finds him pretty amusing,
and his laughter is really contagious. Before she realises it,
she starts to laugh together with him. In the end non-of them
know why they started in the first place, and sit up.
- You're killing me, he says with a
smile.
She could have died for that smile.
- So, back to Tania, she says, even
though she doesn't want to talk about Tania at all.
- Yeah, what should I do? he says.
- Listen, just do the best you can, be honest with
her, and if she's not happy about that, then screw her! Oh, I
mean...
- That's exactly what I'm planning to do,
he replies and they start to laugh again.
- I have to get going. Got to practice a little
first, you know! he jokes and then leaves. She sits
back with one sentence in her head:
"I'll be here for you, George. Always here..."
