Although 'Heads' is just the debut album by 40 Grit , the four boys have already reached quite a lot of recognition before signing a record deal. They are one of the few bands having played at the Dynamo (1999) without a deal and vocalist James Santiago and bassist Kevin Young performed vocals with Billy Milano on S.O.D.'s return album. 40 Grit come from the San Francisco Bay Area, a site which often was associated with Testament in the late eighties. Testament belong surely to 40 Grit's major influences, but they sound as a developed form of their idols. The sometimes haunting and intense vocals sound like Chuck Billy, but the songwriting is technically on a much higher level which draws some parallels to Fear Factory. Hard beating drums and a nose for good melodies, without giving up a good portion of distortion gives the music of 40 Grit a very special flair. To me, this is one of the best Metal albums since Fear Factory's last opus. Now they are touring with Soulfly and Skinlab and I just hope that they will find their way to Europe. |
